INTRODUCTION TO CISM
(Conseil International du Sport Militaire) is the
third world-wide military sporting organization. American General
Pershing was the first to introduce the idea of conducting military
sporting competitions at an international level, organizing the
first intra-allied games at the end of the World War 1. Then another
American, General McNazny, established in 1945 the AFSC (Allied
Forces Sporting Council), which organizes military sporting competitions.
Two years later, on February 1st, 1948, in Cannes, two French officers
(Major H. Debruy and Captain E. Petit) and a Belgian officer (Lieutenant
R.Mollet) decided to reorganize military sporting competitions.
CISM was founded on February 18th, 1948, in France, with with the
participation of Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and
France. The goal of the CISM is to establish permanent relations
among participating nations through sports and physical training.
Major Debruy was the first president and Lieutenant Mollet the first
Secretary General. In 1951 the member nations were already 20. Since
its inception the number of adherent countries has increased to
achieve the present 117 member nations, and in the meantime, CISM
initiatives have multiplied. Organizing almost all worldwide and
regional military competitions, it has arranged many seminars not
only to spread military sport knowledge, but also to improve techniques
and training programmes. With these seminars it has paved the way
for coaches, providing athletes with training programmes and, above
all, establishing a common sporting spirit.
