2/2/2003 Hooray! It's groundhog's day today! We took our little baby outside today, and we saw her shadow on the ground. So that means 6 more weeks of "Winter" here. Of course, we were looking at her shadow as we stood by the palmetto... And then we set out on Kylie's first real adventure! We went to the home center! Man, I love home centers. Maybe it's the power tools, or the scent of lumber, but something just calls to me. I bought some Jiffy-pots! I can hardly wait to start planting! Afterwards, we headed down the road to Baskin Robins, where we enjoyed ice cream like it was summer. So nice... But as much as I like 31 ice cream, I must say that I miss the days before franchises took over America. I miss going to that restauraunt across the street from Buffalo Drug and getting a mint chocolate chip sugar cone. I miss the Maple Lake Cafe and those hamburgers you could get there. Just dripping with grease but so good you wanted another right away. And their chocolate shakes? I still wake up dreaming about them. I miss the Deli on Germaine in St. Cloud. Those club sandwiches were so great! Do you remember when going to a different city, or even a different country, meant that you had no idea what the cafe's and restauraunts were like? Do you know how to spell restauraunt? Because I have no confidence in my spelling of it. And while I do eat at McDonalds, drink Starbucks coffee, and buy diet Coke at 7-11 sometimes, I still get a thrill going to the little coffee shop down the street, and taking a sip of that coffee, bitter, black, strong enough to make your hair stand up, and completely original. Long live the independent merchants!!!! |
