Males may breed within other pods and their own. Therefore, they don't know which calves are actually theirs, and so they usually take care of the calves within their pod. These offspring usually belong to their sisters.
1 1/ 2 years after mating, a female Orca will give a live birth to a 6.6' long calf. It is born tail first in shallow water, and is carried to the surface to take its first breathe of air. The first couple of weeks the calf suckles, 2-3 times every hour. The mother whale will use mammary muscles gland muscles to squirt rich milk intot he calf's mouth.  The calf will suckle for at least 2 years, creating a close bond with their mother. Also, during this period the calf will gain weight quickly.
