Corleer and Loloke
Oremander can make her needle Corleer any size she wishes. She has been known to make it the span of a person, looping a rope from a ship through the needle's eye, diving down to the ocean bottom, and planting it there like an anchor. This keeps the pirate criminals from sailing away. Other times she has made Corleer the length of a sword and uses it as such, deftly wielding it in melee, wrapping the end of her long tail around the eye-hilt. She has never been known to harm anyone with it, using it only for self-defense. But sometimes cutting the rigging off a pirate ship, or rescuing a tied-up kidnappee is in order. More often than not, Corleer is kept the size of an ordinary needle. This is Oremander's favorite size. Here she can use it to stitch up wounds or sails. She also likes to knit ordinary mittens, socks, and scarves as gifts for people she thinks are nice. It is believed Oremander can protect ships from harm using lightning. With Corleer and her nimble crystal claws she can knit lightning into a netting that encompasses ships. This has earned her the name "Lightning-Stitcher". She has been known to use lightning for other ingenious purposes. At will, the needle will point in the direction of what Oremander desires. Sometimes this is home. At other times it is the presence of someone in trouble, or vile mischief afoot. Corleer will guide her to safe harbor or out of storms. The Eye of Corleer sees much. Oremander wears a thimble on her left back claw called Loloke. Like Corleer, it can shift sizes according to the Sea Savior's will. She has been known to adapt her thimble as a life boat for people who have been washed overboard. Oremander can then lift the thimble carrying the person and fly them to safety. An account from Mrs. Everly Figgins of Nomaw, Debraskua sheds some fascinating light on this subject. Mrs. Figgins was washed overboard during a terrible storm and nearly died. Oremander arrived in time to save her. Not only did she drop Loloke for Everly to crawl into and stay afloat, she also connected a cloud to the thimble with lightning bolt strands. The cloud lifted Loloke (with Everly inside) up into the air like a hot air balloon. She says it took her as far as Louisville, Kentucky. This sounds like a far-fetched story, but it is not outside the realm of possibility. Other accounts tell of Oremander lending the thimble to sailors whose boats were flooding and in danger of sinking. She suggested they use it as a bucket. Those that witnessed it firsthand testify that Oremander's Loloke holds five times as much water as an ordinary bucket (and quite a bit more than an ordinary thimble) and makes emptying boats a snap. |
