| Jailed numerous times for his war resistance and nuclear weapons protests, Johnny Baranski published his first haiku in Dragonfly: A Quarterly of Haiku in 1975. His first chapbook, Pencil Flowers: Jail Haiku, was published by Holmgangers Press in 1983. Over the years his haiku have appeared in Frogpond, Modern Haiku, The Heron's Nest, The Red Pagoda, Brussels Sprout, Dragonfly, Wind Chimes, Bamboo Ridge, Parnassus, and several anthologies. His Convicts Shoot the Breeze, written while serving time in Snohomish County Jail in Washington State, is a 2001-2002 Virgil Hutton Haiku Memorial Award Chapbook grand prize winner. Johnny says, "What mainly attracts me to writing haiku and its related linked forms is that it requires more than the poet's technical mastery to be successfulit requires the poet to assume the haiku way of life." He currently resides in Portland, Oregon, where he makes his living as a reader in a press clippings bureau. Johnny has published a new book of poems called just a stone's throw.
