Most whales, including orcas, live and travel in groups called pods. The killer whales depicted in this painting are actual living members of the Pacific Northwest "J" and "K" pods. These are two of the three resident pods which form the southern community of orcas which inhabit the Puget Sound and the waters of British Columbia. Every whale in this image is identifialble by its own particular saddle patch marking, the grey-white pattern just behind the dorsal fin which is as individual and unique to these animals as fingerprints are to humans.
