Chris Benoit's wrestling life was shaped very early on, as he grew up practicing with Stu Hart and his family in Canada. Growing up with the likes of Bret and Owen Hart, The Dynamite Kid, the British Bulldog, and others helped Benoit become very skilled in his future craft. He began his career in the Stampede Federation, where he eventually won the Calgary Stampede Tag-Team titles with Ben Bassarab in March 1986 over Wayne Farris and Ron Starr. Soon after, Benoit left for overseas, becoming the masked Pegasus Kid.

With multiple victories under his belt in Japan, Benoit decided to once again venture back to the US, getting a deal with Extreme Championship Wrestling. In ECW, Benoit truly began to build his wrestling image, wrestling in a massive feud with Sabu. During one brawl, Benoit badly injured Sabu's back, putting him on the shelf for a while. This earned Benoit the nickname "The Crippler", a name that has stayed with him throughout his career. Benoit later began teaming with Dean Malenko, which became another long-lasting alliance. Benoit & Malenko defeated Sabu and the Tazzmaniac in February '95 to win the ECW Tag-Team Titles. The two wrestlers were later joined by Shane Douglas, forming the infamous Triple Threat. Benoit & Malenko lost the belts to the Public Enemy in April, and Benoit soon departed from ECW to go back to Japan. Benoit, renewing "Wild Pegasus", made his mark once more, winning the '95 Best of the Super Juniors by defeating his former partner, Shinjiro Ohtani. With another tournament victory under his belt, Benoit became a hot item, and soon signed with WCW.

Benoit became a popular singles wrestler soon after his arrival in WCW, attracting the attention of many of his peers. He teamed some with Malenko, who had joined WCW with him, while also building a reputation as a solid technical wrestler. In 1996, Benoit joined the IV Horsemen, along with Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, and the late Brian Pillman. During this time, Benoit had short feuds with Malenko, Chris Jericho, Jeff Jarrett, and Meng.

The Horsemen battled the nWo repeatedly over the middle months of '97, and eventually signed to fight in a War Games match at Fall Brawl. During this time, Arn Anderson retired, giving his slot in the Horsemen to Curt Hennig. This proved to be disasterous, as Hennig betrayed the Horsemen to the nWo, helping them to win the War Games match. Soon after, the Horsemen were disbanded by Ric Flair, leaving Benoit without a stable.
