Orange
and Black Features -Vocal jazz
to N.Y. City
by Maria Ismael
O&B Staff Reporter
After nearly six months of rehearsal,
the 20 members of the jazz chior "Scatters"
made their debut at Carnegie Hall when they
participated in the third vocal Jazz Festival on
Feb. 21.
Despite the delays and last minute changes of
their trip due to the unexpected winter storm,
the Scatters, under the directon of Mrs.
Zellhoefer, left for New York City on Feb. 18,
and returned home on Feb. 22.
Scatters performed two of their own songs called
"We B. Doonit," and "All the
Things You Are." They also sang three other
jazz tunes with 10 other selected high school
chiors from around the world. The concert was
opened to the public.
"The students did extremely well,"
Zellhoefer said about their performance. "They
put a lot of work into their music, and I'm very
proud of them."
The Scatters spent a grand total of 15 hours
rehearsing their music and practicing various
vocal techniques in the City Center to prepare
for the concert.
It wasn't all work and no play, however. While
some explored more of the city than others, the
Scatters all took a boat tour around the Statue
of Liberty, went to the Hard Rock Cafe, had
dinner at Times Square, and viewed "The Lion
King" on Broadway. Some members of the group
chose to get up at the crack of dawn to watch the
Today Show.
