defeat Vinton for dual meet victory
by Lindsey Goldsmith
O&B Co-Editor
The
hard work and dedication of the East High men's
swimming team has paid off this year, bringing
them a season of successes.
After a ten year drought in dual meets, the
Trojans swam away with a victory, beating Vinton
on December 14. On January 20, the two teams
faced off in a triangular where East once again
came out on top.
Another feat was accomplished by Chris Stephens
at the MVC Sophomore Super Meet on February 5. He
placed 8 out of 34 swimmers and won a ribbon. The
last time an East High swimmer won a ribbon in
the super meet was twelve years ago.
"We had Chris step up and lead the younger
kids this season," said co-captain Cory
Stephens. "He's worked really hard."
Along with these successes, many of the swimmers
have set personal records as well. With practices
twice a day, the team was dedicated to making
their mark in the conference.
"Our times were greatly improved from the
beginning of the season," said Coach Don
Gibson. "We're really happy with ourselves."
Districts were held in Marshalltown on Saturday,
February 12. East scored 38 points with only
eight swimmers, the most points they've ever
scored. Unfortunately, their score was not high
enough to qualify for state.
"To score that many points with that few of
guys is great. We keep hoping to make state, but
we just couldn't quite get there," said
Gibson.
