"You had sex with Wade!?!"
"Don't say sex in front of Alfred!"
"He's heard it before. Or least heard of it."

The first thing I noticed about this episode was the string of clever one-liners, peppered throughout the episode. Barbara, Helena, Dinah and even Wade all got some great lines. I also really enjoyed MacNally's reaction to Reese's contact being a woman.

Having mentioned MacNally, I hope I wasn't the only one who hoped the explosion wasn't fatal during the commercial break. I think this is the most screen time he's gotten, and I was sure that they were going to kill him off. Luckily he's alive, so he'll show up later. I like his character. He has a lot of potential, and the actor, Brent Sexton, does a good job with him.

The villains were a little bland, but kind of interesting. The leader of an animal inspired gang, Fox, and his manipulations to get Helena into bed were interesting. I'd have rathered the other gang members got a little more to do besides being window dressing, and was dissapointed that Wolf turned out to be a fairly one-note character when there's so much more she could have done.

I thought that Barbara's relationship with Wade has been speeding along, perhaps a little too fast, all things considered, but I have afeeling things are going to be shaking up very soon, so I put my faith in the creators.

Finally, it seems that Carolyn Lance, the Black Canary, did indeed parish in the explosion at the end of last week's episode. Dinah seems primed to take up her mantle though, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Black Canary did reappear at some point, since not body was recovered, and as far as sci-fi and soap opera deaths go, you need the body. And even then doubt is still cast.

Not much else to say on this episode. It seemed to go by really fast, but had a lot of fun and action. I'm looking forward to Darkstrike next week, and then Lady Shiva after that.

WB Summary for "Primal Scream"

"At the request of Det. Reese (Shemar Moore), Helena (Ashley Scott) goes undercover to help bring down a gang of thieves terrorizing New Gotham and quickly discovers that the gang is part of a larger infrastructure. Helena goes after the big boss until her cover is blown, putting her in grave danger. Meanwhile, Barbara (Dina Meyer) has to deal with her fear of intimacy when her relationship with Wade (guest star, Shawn Christian) takes a serious turn."

TV Guide Summary for "Primal Scream"

"Helena's complicated relationship with Reese gets even thornier when she collaborates with the procedure-preferring cop by going undercover to join a motorcycle gang of thrill-seeking criminals. Meanwhile, Barbara worries that Helena may be enjoying the job a bit too much; and Dinah continues to repress her feelings about her mother. Harley Quinn: Mia Sara. Reese: Shemar Moore. Barbara: Dina Meyer."

Comicology for "Primal Scream"

I think this may be the first time that Barbara's father, former Gotham Police Commissioner Jim Gordon has been mentioned. In pratically every form and version of Batman, the dark knight and Gordon have been uneasy allies. Commissioner Gordon, an honest cop, relies upon Batman, a vigilante above the law, to help him take on crime that the police can't handle. Gordon is Barbara's father, and it had been rumored that Gordon will appear on Birds of Prey sometime this season.

The Animal gang, using the names of animals and wearing masks, is similar to the Terrible Trio, three wealthy socialites looking for a thrill, who robbed banks wearing masks resembling a fox, a vulture and a shark. The Terrible Trio first appeared in Detective Comics #253 (Nov. 1958).
