   Replacements and the Recovery Phase

Any RSU, which is in good order, and received a RES during the previous Orders Phase, is not Isolated, and is not part of a DSU which was forced to retreat due to combat, is eligible to receive INF replacements at the beginning of the Recovery Phase.

Each RSU will receive about 10% of the total understrength of the RSU. For example, if an RSU normally has 500 SPs when at full strength, and it currently has 400 SPs, then it will receive 10 INF SPs…it is 100 SPs below full strength, and 10% = 10 SPs received. The replacements are strictly INF, and will be placed in understrength platoons up to each platoon’s maximum. Most types of leg units are eligible, including MG, AT INF, AA INF, etc…but not heavier weapons such as mortars, INF guns, towed weapons, etc. Once the normal

complement of these units is at full strength, then no more replacements are received. Any replacements

unable to be used are lost, and are non-transferable to another RSU.

Tracked vehicles and other armored units (that are “hard targets”) receive replacements under special

circumstances. When a DSU captures an enemy sector after a battle involving friendly armor units, it will receive about 20% of the understrength number, figured in the same way as the INF. This is to reflect the recovery of slightly damaged vehicles after capturing the ground. Any RSU in the DSU is eligible, as long as it is in good order…it does not have to be in RES. If we see this rule being misused, no armor replacements will arrive. Do not spend 2 days fighting over a sector with INF RSUs, keeping a armor unit in the background, and plan on getting armor replacements. We simply don’t have the time to log every actual vehicle wreck in a sector, so this abstraction  will be handled as the GoW see fit.

   Morale, REMO, and Retreats.

There  are 2 types of morale used in our Campaign.

The first type is the morale number used by all units in the game engine during actual play…this number is used to check for disruption and recovery by the engine throughout the scenario. This is always referred to in these rules as the plain morale factor.

The second type is used exclusively by the GoW for the Campaign. This is the Regimental Morale (REMO). Every RSU has its own REMO number.  Immediately after the Combat Phase, the GoW make a REMO check for every RSU on the battle map that belongs to a DSU that either engaged in combat or moved. The GoW will use a 10 sided die, with modifiers, to check the RSUs…the RSU must roll equal to or lower than its REMO number to remain in good order. If the roll is higher than the REMO number, the the RSU “shatters” and immediately goes into DSU RES.. .if the DSU has no RSUs in good order, that could conceivably be given  a MOB or DEF in the next Orders Phase, then that DSU must immediately retreat 1 sector towards a friendly map edge. The DSU cannot actually leave the campaign map. The exact placement of the retreating DSU will be determined by the GoW. Stacking and enemy DSUs may have an effect on the retreat.  If a DSU must retreat into a sector and creates an overstack (more than 2 DSUs present) then the DSU will continue to retreat, and all DSUs in the overstacked sector must undergo REMO checks, possibly shattering completely themselves. A DSU which has no legal retreat path is instead destroyed. Any DSU which consists of only shattered RSUs must retreat during the Movement if their sector is entered by an enemy DSU.

The REMO number always starts as a 10, but is modified in the following ways:

   All SS Panzer RSUs: -1

All Soviet Tanks, Mech, Guards; all other SS units and Axis armor: -2

   All other units: -3

    Other modifiers:

   Winning the scenario: +1

   Losing the scenario: -1

RSU Fatigue Level: -1 per level

    Current strength level %:

   Below 75% strength: -1

   Below 50%: -2

   Below 30%: -3

(these last 3 are not cumulative, but all others are!)

During the Recovery phase. All shattered RSUs make a REMO check. If they pass, then they become good

Order units. All of the above modifiers still apply, except for the win/lose scenario modifier. In addition, and only during the recovery phase, Soviet units receive a +1 modifier.

There are no further penalties if a shattered RSU fails to go back into good order status, with one major exception…if a shattered RSU is 20% or more below strength, and it fails to recover, then it is immediately disbanded, with a total loss to its remaining units.

   Consolidation of Weakened Units

During the Recovery Phase,  some weakened RSUs may join together, but this must be planned ahead during the Orders Phase, and noted specifically in the DSU’s notes section. Any two RSUs may join together, but the end result cannot bring the consolidated RSU above 100%...any leftover men and equipment is lost. This consolidation is permanent, and the weaker RSU is considered to be disbanded for good. Note that this action not only rebuilds and RSU at the cost of the other one, but the rebuilt RSU may improve its chances to recover by getting a less negative strength level modifier. This consolidation takes place before shattered RSUs make recovery checks.
