It took one glance the wrong direction for the car to sideswipe her. A fraction of a second and she heard, rather than felt, the steel crumple into the driver�s side door. The horror of metal digging into her flesh, tearing at the bare skin of her shoulder, that came in the accompanying seconds. The seconds she counted down in her now spinning car.

It was a relief when she felt herself slip into unconsciousness, her eyes rolling back in her head, providing an escape from the dizzying nausea, the dull ache that grew on her left side with every breath.

The slow dive into oblivion came in a rush of breath. Her skin felt lighter, brighter. The pain faded. It got warmer, darker. The world was crimson. And the siren sounded far away, a mere tinkling of a bell.
