The sight was gruesome. The first to arrive on the scene was unfortunately an eighty three year old grandmother. With bad eyesight and a rapidly faltering heart. But she had stopped when others had passed, when many had slowly looky looed, making it difficult for emergency workers to maneuver ambulances to help. She had pulled over and found the caved in blue Corolla and the bleeding girl inside it.
Her hand shook with Palsy, trembled more with fear, and ran gently through the dark brown locks of the unconscious driver. Her hair was wet and sticky, warm with blood.
Mrs. Grace was amazing if only because in that moment when her frail white hand pulled back from the touch soaked deep crimson in the young woman�s blood, she didn�t pass out. She stared for a moment. Held her hand quivering in front of her. And then thread the long bony fingers back over the girl�s forehead.
�It�s gonna be all right,� Mrs. Grace soothed, her cataract clouded gaze searching out the busy road for help.
The car had spun from where it had been hit in the far left lane of the four lane road all the way over to the far right shoulder. It was something to be glad of, Mrs. Grace whispered to the silent girl quietly. Being safe on the shoulder. She could�ve ended up in the middle. �What a place that would�ve been.�
The siren was louder now. �Coming soon,� Mrs. Grace said. She nodded to herself. �Soon.�
When the EMTs arrived, they helped the old woman away. Sat her down in her own car. Talked to her. One did. The other ones moved to the battered car. The bruised woman inside. Mrs. Grace hoped someone would talk to the girl.
�Yes, maam.� The young man who talked to her kept nodding. Mrs. Grace�s eyes went past him, into the car. She saw the blood soaked hair. No one was holdinh her.
�She needs talking to, must be so scared. It was quite an accident.�
He nodded again. �Yes, Maam.�
