Two
See the pyramids along the Nile,
Watch the sunrise from a tropic isle,
just remember, darling all the while
you belong to me
The words came up slowly that morning, a product of a computer three years too old and a hard drive two months too crowded.
It sucks to be faced with an old friend when theyre not expected. Like being grabbed and pulled into an alley by the friendly neighborhood mugger, Joey thought. It was one of those morning thoughts that flits in front of your eyes long enough for your lips to move with the words, but not quite long enough to tingle out into actual speech.
His lips trailed down her bare neck and she grinned, even as his clear blue eyes read over her shoulder, becoming more troubled and stormy in the reflection of the monitor the further down the short email he read.
Pacey, she breathed. Joey caught his hand as it ran up her side. Dont even say it.
Why is he emailing you?
The jealousy in his voice was only out of habit, the anger and twinge of fear a new addition to the usual annoyance. She swiveled in her desk chair to face him and met his eyes with her patented lopsided smile.
Hes emailing me because, Joey shrugged and wrinkled her nose, because I forgot about him. Its been a few months and so he emails me. Thats Dawson. No biggie.
She turned back to the computer screen. With a swift circle of the mouse, the email was deleted. Another couple taps of the keyboard and the trash was emptied. Paceys large hands found their way onto her shoulders, fingers brushing through the ends of her long dark hair.
Youre not gonna reply? Pacey asked doubtfully.
Her hair whipped into his face with the insistent shake of her head. I am not.
She quickly typed out a message to Bessie, closed up the program and shut the computer down. As it whirred into quiet, she spun out of the chair and into Paceys arms. He looked down at her in surprise. Youre really surprisingly graceful for your height, Potter.
And you still type with two fingers, Pace. Joey stuck her tongue out at him. Go figure.
So, where ya headed?
Out.
Can I come?
No.
Ill just get my coat and-what?
No, you cant come with me. Ill be back in a couple hours, kay? Just study and, she made a flourishing wave with her hand and gave him a dazzling smile, think of me.
Always.
Ill be back.
