Considerations for mechanisation in peat drainage design

ABSTRACT
A suitable drainage sy
stem is necessary for jungle clearing and land development of virgin peatland.
To mechanise these operations, considerations for mechanisation must be incorpor
ated into the drainage design. Controlled drainage is required not only to expl
oit the peat soil for agricultural production but also to facilitate the mechani
sation of crop production as well as prolong the productivity of this depleting
resource. Studies on the effect of drainage design on the mechanical properties
of peat soil relating to floatation and trafficability of machinery were carrie
d out at MARDI peat research stations in Jalan Kebun and Pontian and some of the
more significant results obtained are presented and discussed. The load bearin
g capacity of the soil decreases as the soil moisture content is increased. The
effect of rain is the lowering of the load bearing capacity of the soil until t
he water is drained off. Special precautions must be taken when using any machi
nery very near to a field drain e.g. when using the hydraulic excavator for drai
n maintenance work. Technical problems are faced in the design of the drainage
system at the farm level for crop machanisation on peat.

Satu sistem saliran yang sesuai perlu bagi kegiatan dan kerja-kerja berkaita
n dengan pembukaan hutan dan pembangunan tanah di kawasan gambut. Jika ada ranc
angan untuk jentera digunakan, keperluan mekanisasi perlu diambilkira dalam mere
kabentuk sistem saliran. Saliran terkawal diperlukan bukan sahaja untuk tujuan
pertanian, tetapi juga untuk penjenteraan penanaman pertanian dan untuk melanjut
kan daya pengeluaran tanah gambut, satu sumber yang jadi semakin kurang. Bebera
pa kajian telah dijalankan untuk mengkaji kesan rekabentuk saliran kepada sifat-
sifat mekanikal tanah gambut yang berkaitan dengan penggunaan jentera di tanah g
ambut. Hasil kajian tersebut dibincangkan. Keupayaan penampungan tanah gambut
didapati berkurang bila kandungan airnya bertambah. Kesan hujan pula disalirkan
. Perhatian khusus perlu diberi apabila menggunakan jentera berdekatan dengan p
arit ladang, misalnya penggunaan jenkaut hidrolik untk kerja penyelenggaraan par
it. Beberapa masalah teknikal dihadapi dalam rekabentuk sistem saliran di perin
gkat ladang untuk penjenteraan tanaman di kawasan gambut.
