Current status of Rice Husk and Other Biomass Utilisation

ABSTRACT
Malaysia produces a great amount of collectable biomass
from its agriculture. Most of it is burnt in the open,
incorporated into the soil or just dumped somewhere to
decompose naturally. Utilisation of rice husk for padi drying
in a rice mill was reported. Rubber wood is extensively being
used as firewood and and charcoal. The biomass produced in
the oil palm mill are being used to produce steam for
electricity generation. A problem faced in the utilisation of
rice husk and other biomass is maintaining a regular supply
of constant composition, moisture and quality. Rice husk and
other biomass have low bulk densities and high moisture
contents which make handling, transportation and storage
difficult and uneconomical. There is on official national
policy on the use of new and renewable sources of energy and
very little research work is being conducted in this field.
In view of the problems of rice hush ash, research on power
generation through gasification was suggested.

Malaysia mengeluarkan banyak biomass menerusi
pertaniannya. Kebanyakannya dibakar, dicampur ke dalam tanah
atau dihimpunkan sahaja. Pengunaan sekam padi untuk
pengeringan padi di sebuah kilang padi pernah dilaporkan.
Kayu getah banyak digunakan sebagai kayu api atau kayu arang.
Biomass dari buah kelapa sawit digunakan untuk menghasilkan
tenaga letrik untuk kilang berkenaan. Masalah penggunaan
sekam padi dan biomass lain ialah dalam pembekalan tetap
bahan yang seragam kandungan, kelembapan dan mutu. Sekam
padi dan biomass lain mempunyai kepadatan pukal rendah dan
kelembapan tinggi yang membuat kerja-kerja penggendalian,
pengangkutan dan penyimpanannya rumit dan tidak berekonomi.
Masih tiada polisi kebangsaan bekenaan dengan tenaga-tenaga
baru dan tidak banyak kajian dalam bidang ini sedang
dijalankan. Memandangkan masalah berkaitan abu sekam padi,
penyelidikan penghasilan tenaga menerusi gasifikasi
dicadangkan.
