Design and evaluation of interrow carriers for
pineapple

ABSTRACT
The work involved in the design and development of three
motorised interrow carriers to assist in the collection of
pineapple fruits was discussed. The carriers were evaluated
under pineapple field conditions in MARDI stations. The
prototype motorised wheelbarrow MW-1 was found to have good
traction and floatation features which enabled it to work on
soft peat soil. However, when used along the interrows, it
had a strong tendency to topple sideways due to the high
centre of gravity of the load. On the other hand, the
prototype motorised wheelbarrow MW-2 had excellent lateral
stability but poor traction and floatation characteristics.
Efforts to incorporate all the desirable design features into
a new prototype wheelbarrow MW-3 had not been successful
because the narrow interrow path width placed a limit on the
overall machine width. The experimental Astriding-carrier was
found to have steering problems on uneven soil surfaces.
Suggestions for further development of the Astriding-carrier
were given.

Kerja-kerja yang berkaitan dengan rekabentuk dan kemajuan
tiga buah jentera angkut yang bermotor untuk digunakan di
antara baris pokok nanas telah dihuraikan. Jentera-jentera
ini telah dinilai di ladang nanas di stesen-stesen MARDI.
Jentera prototaip MW-1 didapati mempunyai ciri-ciri rekaan
penarikan dan pengapungan yang baik yang membolehkannya
digunakan di tanah gambut yang lembut. Walau bagaimanapun
jentera in senang terbalik kerana lokasi pelantar muatannya
tinggi. Jentera prototaip MW-2 telah didapati sangat stabil,
tetapi ciri penarikan dan pengapungannya kurang baik. Usaha-
usaha untuk menggabungkan semua ciri baik kedua jentera
prototaip tersebut dalam rekaan jentera prototaip baru, MW-3
tidak berjaya. Masalah ini kerana lorong yang tidak lebar di
antara pokok nanas menghadkan saiz jentera. Jentera angkut
bentuk mengangkang didapati mempunyai masalah untuk memusing
di tanah yang tidak rata. Cadangan-cadangan untuk memajukan
jentera ini adalah dipaparkan bersama.
