Modification of MALTRAK's track for use on soft padi
soil

ABSTRACT
A major constraint in rice mechanisation is machinery
trafficability on soft padi soil. The use of wooden strake to
improve traction had resulted in the erosion and lowering of the
padi soil hardpan. The design requirements of the tractive device
for soft padi soil were discussed. MALTRAK's track system appeared
to meet most of these requirements. Traction tests were conducted
on MALTRAK fitted with different track designs in a continuously
flooded nursery plot at MARDI Rice Research Station, Tanjung
Karang. The effect of grouser plate design, grouser plate spacing
and belt width on the development of drawbar pull were
investigated. Manoeuvrability trials on tarmac and on hard dry
padi soils were also conducted. It was found that the optimum
design of the track system for use on soft and hard padi soils was
made up of a 30 cm wide rubber track belt fitted with 45 cm long
straight lug grouser plates at 15 cm spacing. MALTRAK fitted with
these tracks was found to perform land rotavation work
satisfactorily on soft padi soils whose cone index exceeds 1.0
kgf/cm2 average for 0-40 cm depth.

Masalah utama dalam mekanisasi tanaman padi ialah daya
pergerakan jentera pertanian dalam sawah bertanah lembut.
Penggunaan kayu roda sebagai alat bantu gerak untuk traktor empat
roda telah mewujudkan kesan-kesan hakisan dan penurunan lapisan
datar keras. Penentuan rekabentuk bagi alat bantu gerak yang
lebih sesuai untuk sawah bertanah lembut telah dibincangkan.
Sistem trek MALTRAK dijangka mungkin sesuai dan ujian-ujian
penarikan olih berbagai bentuk trek telah dijalankan di dalam
petak semaian yang sentiasa ditenggelami air di stesen MARDI,
Tanjung Karang. Kesan rekabentuk tapak besi (grouser), jarak
antara tapak besi dan lebarnya tali trek getah telah
dikajiselidik. Ujian daya pergerakan juga dijalankan di jalanraya
bertar dan di dalam sawah bertanah kering dan keras. Didapati
rekabentuk trek yang merangkumi tali trek getah 30 cm lebar dan
tapak besi 45 cm panjang yang berjejak lurus dan dipasang dengan
jarak 15 cm merupakan sistem trek yang paling optimum untuk
pergerakan dalam sawah bertanah lembut dan keras. MALTRAK yang
dipasang dengan sistem trek ini didapati sesuai untuk pembajakan
tanah sawah lembut yang berkon indeks melebihi 1.0 kgf/cm2 purata
bagi 0-40 cm kedalaman.
