Ontario Fire Towers
Above is the Larose Forest Fire Tower still standing but with a different cupola. You can see that they cut off the top 20 feet and placed the octagonal cupola inside the protruding steel beams.

To the left is the McKim Tower which stands at the old Murray Mine site in Sudbury right off the highway. This must have been a funny place to view for forest fires in the 1960s since almost all the trees in Sudbury had been decimated by the extensive nickel mining operation pollution. It is still a pretty barren terrain with next to no soil and small poplar and birch as the main species. Can u imagine having to climb the radio tower beside it which must stand at least 240 feet?

Not far NW of Sudbury is the Windy Lake Tower at Onaping Falls taken here in the late 1990's. This must be one of the oldest ones still standing  as it is light steel and has guy wires and was built in 1928. I will have to climb this one next year. Courtesy: Joanne Ouellet, who can be seen at the base.
Below are three fabulous photos courtesy of the North Bay MNR. The 1st is an unknown cupolaless tower, and the 2nd is Mattawan Tower (the roof is now gone due to vandalism), and the last is the original 80 ft Widdifield Tower that was manned by Mary Kennedy in the 1940s. It was replaced by the 100 foot Joe Tower in 1959 and was used on the tv show "The Forest Rangers" in the winter of 1965.
