One Day Cricket

The development is a process inevitable for the growth of anything which exists in this world. The game of cricket is no exception. From a pretty village sport it has grown to an international status creating an unofficial "Commonwealth" of cricket playing nations.

A positive development was the introduction of "ONE DAY CRICKET" matches of limited overs. This change really clicked. The players, the organizing institutions and the cricket lovers appreciated it. In the CONSEQUENCE, the Limited Overs Cricket Tournament was first organized in England. Following is a short history of Limited Overs Cricket:

GILLETTE CUP (now the National Westminister Bank Trophy) was the first Limited Overs competition, held in England in 1963.
The John Player Sunday League (now Refuge Assurance League) followed in 1969.
After three years the last Limited Overs Tournament initiated by the Benson & Hedges was played in England in 1972.
But prior to this last domestic Limited Overs contest of 1972 the FIRST ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL was played between England and Australia at Melbourne on 5th January, 1971. The Result: Australia beat England by five wickets.

Floodlit Limited Overs Cricket contest was introduced in the late 1970's by Kerry Packers.
