| Chapter 1: place value - the value given to a digit by its place in a number 123 means 1hundred, 2 tens, 3 ones digit - any of the symbols used to write numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 expanded form - a way of writing a number as the sum of the values of its digits 123 = 100 + 20 + 3 standard form - a way to write a number that shows only its digits 123 round - to find the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, and so on 1,634 round to 1,630 to the nearest ten Chapter 2: addend - a number to be added 3 + 4 = 7 (3 & 4 are addends) Commutative Property - when adding, the order of the numbers can change but the sum is the same 3 + 4 = 7 4 + 3 = Associative Property - when adding, the grouping of numbers can change but the sum is the same 3 + (4 + 2) = 9 (3 + 4) + 2 = 9 pattern - a series of numbers or figures that follows a rule 3 + 4 = 7 30 + 40 = 70 300 + 400 = 700 regroup - to name a number in a different way Regroup 18 ones as 1 ten 8 ones estimate - to find an answer that is close to the exact answer. 321 + 189 is about 300 + 200 = 500 Chapter 3: fact family - a set of related facts 7 + 4 = 11, 4 + 7 = 11, 11 - 4 = 7, 11 - 7 = 4 related facts - basic facts using the same numbers 4 + 7 = 11 7 + 4 = 11 regroup - to name a number in a different way 3 tens 2 ones = 2 tens 12 ones Chapter 4: A.M. - a name for time between 12 midnight and 12 noon P.M. - a name for time between 12 noon and 12 midnight elapsed time - the amount of time it takes to go from start to finish The amount of time that elapses between 1:00 P.M. and 2:00 P.M. is 1 hour. line plot - a graph that uses Xs above a line to show data survey - a method of gathering data by asking people questions A common survey question is "What is your favorite color?" pictograph - a graph that shows data by using symbols key - tells how many items each symbol stands for bar graph - a graph that shows data by using bars of different lengths scale - marks that are equally spaced along a side of a graph ordered pair - a pair of numbers that gives the location of point on a map or grid (4, 2) |
