Math Vocabulary
Chapters 5 & 6:
factor
- numbers that are multiplied to give a product
   4 x 3 = 12;  the number 4 & 3 are factors.   12 is the product

product - the answer in multiplication

multiplication - an operation that tells how many in all when equal groups are combined

multiplication sentence - a math statement that uses an equals symbol
     4 x 3 = 12

multiple - the product of a number and any whole number   4 x 3 = 12

array - objects or symbols displayed in rows and colums

Commutative Property of Multiplication - the order of the numbers does not affect the product     2 x 3 = 3 x 2

Identity Property - the product of 1 and the number is the number
     2 x 1 = 2

Zero Property of Multiplication - the product of 0 and the number is zero
    2 x 0 = 0       (Zero is the King and he wants everyone to be just like him.)

Associative Property of Multiplication - grouping of factors does not affect the product.   (1 x 3) x 2 = 1 x (3 x 2)

square number - the product of multiplying a number by itself
   2 x 2  or 3 x 3

Chapter 7:
division - an operation on two numbers that tells how many groups or how many in each group       6 divided by 3 = 2

dividend - a number to be divided   10 divided by 5 = 2;  10 is the dividend

divisor - the number by which the divided is divided
    10 divided
5 = 2;  5 is the divisor

quotient - the answer in division      10 divided by 5 = 2;   2 is the quotient

Chapter 11:
length - the measurement of distance between two endpoints

capacity - a measure of dry or liquid of the container volume

weight - a measurement that tells how heavy an object is

mass - the amount of matter in an object

Celsius (C) - temperature measured in metric degrees

Fahrenheit (F) - temperature measured in customary degrees
