Old Varndeanians III 1 East Court 8

EAST Court won for the first time in three matches on Saturday as they thrashed Brighton-based Old Varndeanians III in the second round of the Somerville Challenge Cup. The result means that they will entertain Fletching in the quarter finals.

East Court were forced into a change after James Salter limped out of the league meeting between these two sides last week. Paul Bishop made his first start of the season in goal and regular keeper Daniel Lamprell was moved to left back.

The match started quickly as the home side threatened inside the first couple of minutes. A dangerous cross was whipped in from the right wing and centre back Dan Medcalf was forced to head behind with the Varndeanians number 9 lurking behind him ready to pounce. But within minutes East Court were in front as Ben Sunderland played in Ross Kelly to open the scoring. Billy Denyer scored a second moments later after being fed by Paul Brice and before 15 minutes were up Lee Champion had added a third from the penalty spot after good work by skipper Simon Nickols. East Court continued to press hard and were rewarded with a fourth before half-time from Brice who fired home after a left wing cross was half-cleared.

The second half started in the same vain as the first with East Court well on top. Ben Sunderland lobbed the keeper for the fifth after Champion had freed him down the left. Sunderland then scored again after good work from Denyer. Denyer scored the last two goals to complete his hat-trick. First he was played in by a Brice free-kick and then by Andy Wright. In between Brice had had a goal disallowed for off-side and he also fired over an open goal from three yards out after Medcalf and Sunderland had combined to put him in.

For the last 20 minutes the match petered out as the result was in no doubt but keeper Bishop had to make a number of good saves as Varndeanians strove for a consolation goal. In the last minute they finally got one when East Court failed to close down a midfielder and his shot went over Bishop into the top corner.
