East Court FC 8 Newick II 0

EAST Court FC marched into the quarter finals of the Mid Sussex Football League Stratford Cup after they demolished Newick II 8-0 at Imberhorne School on Saturday (January 11).

On a hard pitch East Court were quickly into their stride and were 4-0 up inside the first 20 minutes. Andrew Wright gave the home side the lead when Martyn Bishop's corner resulted in a goalmouth scramble and Wright smashed a fine volley past the Newick keeper. Billy Denyer added a second when captain Simon Nickols flicked on a long ball and Denyer beat a defender before slamming the ball past the keeper. It was soon three when James Salter crossed from the right and Nickols sent a looping header over the Newick keeper and into the net. Denyer then added his second and East Court's fourth when he ran on to a long ball from the defence and dribbled into the area before poking the ball past the keeper and inside the near post. Just before half-time the home side made it five when Dave Nolan's corner was inadvertantly headed into his own net by a Newick defender.

Such was East Court's dominance in the first half their keeper Paul Bishop did not touch the ball.

In the second half Newick tried to come forward but were stopped by the excellent defending of Wright, player-manager Daniel Medcalf and Dave Nolan. Mark Nolan, who had an excellent game, was also instrumental tidying up in midfield. East Court made it six when Salter took a corner and Carl Buckler scored his second goal in as many games as he made no mistake steering a half-volley into the corner of the net. Newick almost pulled one back when a Newick forward went through but Medcalf's intervention just cleared the bar. The home side then had to play the last 20 minutes with 10 men after Dave Nolan went off injured. But there was still time for two more goals. Denyer's corner was headed home by Nickols and then the same player charged down an attempted clearance for the home side's eighth. Nickols passed the ball to Denyer who beat a couple of defenders before backheeling to Salter who made no mistake from 18 yards.
