On November 13, 1999 the Oakland Mills Cross Country team won the programs
10TH State Title. Glenelg was second by only ONE point and the defending State
Champs, Westmar, were only 10 points back for third. These three teams were true
warriors and battled to make the last X-C race of the millennium an awesome one.
The girls finished 9th and had no Seniors race and the boys had only two Seniors
race today so the Scorps hope to continue the tradition of successful X-C teams
next year. Check back soon, I will have more comments later but I have to
CELEBRATE the programs 10TH State Title now. Congrats Scorps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome to the Oakland Mills Cross Country Site. The site will be updated with
OM XC Stats and other information related to OM XC. Check back for periodic
updates.
We started off the season by holding Time Trials and the Annual Alumni Race on
September 6, 1999. The course was muddy due to several days of rain but hey,
that is part of Cross Country. We had a nice turnout for the Alumni Run. We want
to thank all the parents and alumni for coming out and running through the
course, hills and all. Please see below for Results for the OM Runners.
On September 9 we went to Hammond High School for a Scrimmage. The girls were
able to complete their race but the boys race was called due to thunderstorms
moving into the area. We had four girls compete: Danielle Stoddart won in 23:53;
Kierney Hiteshew was 4th in 25:49; Sachele Edwards was 10th in 32:02 and Tracie
Blummer was 11th in 32:03.
The Howard County Invite scheduled for Friday September 17 was cancelled due to
the effects of Hurricane Floyd.
The boys team began the season with a bang by beating Glenelg on their home
course. The score was OM 30, Glenelg 34, Long Reach 74. Glenelg was second at
Regionals last year and appear to be our competition for another title this
year. The girls were very competitive as well but did not field a complete team.
The improvement from the time trials has been enormous and the hopes are high.
See below for results of the Glenelg tri-meet.
At the Bull Run Invite (Hereford) on Saturday September 25 we had three girls
compete and all continue to improve. The boys finished 8th out of 41 teams and
beat Westmar, the defending state champs. See below for team and individual
results of the Bull Run Invite.
On Saturday October 2 at the Fort Frederick Invite (Frostburg) we only had two
girls compete. The boys ran very well and finished 12 out of 20 in a very
competitive field. We beat Glenelg by 10 points and found out that Westmar is
suffering from some injuries and that Southern Garrett (2nd at States in '98
after winning six straight State Titles to tie the OM record) has suffered from
graduation. A 1A STATE TITLE IS WITHIN REACH! See below for team and individual
results.
The team ran very well at the Autumn Classic (Ft. Meade) on Friday, October 8.
We had our 1st guy place 4th overall (Carldrickiss Haymon) and our 1st girl
place 3rd overall (Danielle Stoddart). The boys team placed 5th in a very
competitive filed of 19 teams. Two 4A schools and two private schools beat us.
The girls fielded a team for the first time this year and placed 14th out of 19
schools.
The team ran well again Wednesday, October 13, at Long Reach H.S. The boys came
away with a victory over Mt. Hebron and Long Reach. Alex Bailey led the scorps
with a strong effort to finish 2nd. Danielle Stoddart led the girls race with a
2nd place finish. The girls fielded another complete team and finished 2nd to
Mt. Hebron.
With less than a month to go, the Scorps continue to look very strong. It was a
wet day for the home meet and times were outstanding considering the conditions,
the hills were a muddy mess. Carl Haymon battled Centennial's ace but came up
short as both broke 18 minutes. The boys received a boost by having Mark
Grgurich and Joel Selby return from the injuried reserve. However, Riley
Jennifer, a top five runner for the Scorps, is still feeling pain in his knee
and has missed the last couple races. The boys narrowly beat Atholton and
Centennial to go undefeated in the dual meet county schedule. The girls had
seven finishers today and look to be ready for the postseason. Danielle Stoddart
won the race and missed breaking the Oakland Mills course record by 25 seconds.
The conditions of the course did not help her chances. The girls added Cassy
Gutierrez to the roster and had Amy Lutz compete in her first race of the
season. Centennial won while Atholton nipped the Scorps for second.
The County course was lengthened from 3 miles to 3.1 miles or a true 5k this
year. The times are not comparable but as is always the case, everyone has to do
the same thing. The girls finished 8th. River Hill beat Mt. Hebron again with
Glenelg third. Lee McDuff edged Kate Frande and Danielle Stoddart was fifth. The
boys finished 5th behind River Hill, Atholton, Centennial and Mt. Hebron. We
thought we had an outside shot at 2nd but also knew any one of six teams could
be 2nd. It was a very close battle and OM did beat Wilde Lake and Glenelg. Carl
Haymon earned a medal by finishing tenth. Sean McGhee had his best race of the
year finishing 22nd and was followed closely by Alex Bailey and Brian Fleming.
Full results will be available.
The Regional Meet, held at Herring Run Park, went very well for the Scorpions.
The boys won their 14th Regional (3rd straight) title while the girls finished
2nd. The boys ran outstanding and put 6 guys in the top 10 - Carldrickiss Haymon
finished 3rd behind Jon Goldsmith and Brian Selmer from Glenelg; Brian Fleming
ran his best race of the year and finished 4th; Sean McGehee finished 6th; Alex
Bailey finished 8th; Riley Jennifer made his return by running a very strong
race to finish 9th; Joel Selby finished 10th and Alejandro Roncagliolo finished
21st. OM scored 30 points to win and Glenelg was 2nd with 45 points. The boys
are looking strong and will go to Hereford next week looking for their 10th
State Title. The girls also ran outstanding and finished 2nd with 53 points
while Glenelg won with 19 points. Danielle Stoddart ran a very strong race and
finished 2nd to Carrie Selmer. The two ran stride for stride and finished only 2
seconds apart - it was a very exciting race. Kierney Hiteshew ran her best race
of the year to finish 9th; Sachele Edwards finished 16th; Tracie Blummer
finished 19th; Cassy Gutierrez finished 21st; Amy Lutz finished 22nd and Johanna
Roncagliolo finished 23rd. The girls look forward to competing in the State meet
next week.
