1A State Championships

Oakland Mills edges Glenelg again this year to win their 11th State Title.  After beating Glenelg by only 1 point in 1999 the Scorps beat them by 3 points in 2000.  However, the story of the day was that Riley Jennifer, a mainstay in the teams top 4 and one of the captains and true leaders on the team, blacked out less than a mile from the finish and did not finish.  Grgurich and McGinnis saw their teammate in trouble and got a boast of adrenaline knowing the team was in trouble and needed help.  Their effort in the 3rd mile was the difference.  Jennifer is OK but disappointed.  The team accomplished the goal and that was Jennifer's 1st and most important goal so his disappointment will fade quickly.  The team was lead by a true warrior, Mehmedovic.  He won the Scorps 3rd individual State Championship.  Haymon was 8th, McGehee was 13th again and Selby was 20th, all these guys improved their times from a year ago and needed to for the team to win.  Grgurich was 31st and McGinnis was 39th in their first state meet.  The girls finished 8th and were led by Densmore (25th).  Alpert was 44th, Beaman was 47th, Edwards was 60th, Robinson was 65th and Guiterrez was 72nd.  The girls got to states again this year and had another super effort today as they did at regionals.  Way to go Scorps!  The coaches want to thank each and everyone of you for all the work you put in and the effort you gave this year!

1A Central Regionals

The boys won their 15th regional title and 4th in a row on Thursday November 2, 2000.  Izzy led the way with a 2 second victory over Glenelg's Jon Goldsmith.  OM had 5 in the top 10 and scored 32 points in the small five team field.  Poolesville was second with 46 and Glenelg was third with 52.  The girls were in forth at the two mile mark but the traditionally well run third mile by OM helps move the girls up for a runner-up position at the regional meet again this year.  There were four teams in the meet and only three would qualify for states.  Glenelg won with 21, OM was second with 66, Brunswick was third with 67 and Poolesville was forth with 73.  The fifth runners for OM (Joel and Erica) were the difference today!  Congrats Scorps!  We are not done yet, the biggest one of the year remains!

Howard County Championships

OM boys finish 3rd led by medal winners Izzy (1st) and Carl (12th) and ribbon winners Riley (20th) and Sean (22nd).  River Hill wins while Wilde Lake edges OM by 3 points for 2nd.

OM girls finish 9th led by Allison (25th) and Nicole (35th).

Almost every OM runner improved their time by a minute from the meet on the same course 6 weeks ago.  2 big meets to go.

OM, Centennial at Atholton

Boys: OM 30, Atholton 43, Centennial 48

The boys finish 7-1 in tri meet season.

Girls: Centennial 26, OM 33, Atholton Inc.

20th Annual Westminster Invitational

The team sat and waited outside the school for the bus as for the second time this year the bus was over an hour late.  Perry Gorelik was stung on the lip waiting for the bus to add to the teams misfortune.  The team missed the course walk but they arrived 20 minutes before the Varsity Boys were to start.  OM had a very difficult schedule and they hope it prepares them for the championship meets at the end of the season.  They dealt with the adversity and the competition very well and finished 7th out of 27 teams while beating all the county teams that were there (Centennial, Atholton, Mt. Hebron and Hammond).  Izzy placed 7th and beat all the county runners in the race while running 16:33.  Sean McGehee had his best race this year as he broke 18 minutes.  There were only two 1A schools in the race and the other placed 27th.  The girls team was led by outstanding performances from Nicole Alpert and Sachelle Edwards.  Kierney Hiteshew and Jessica Castonguay, who have been nursing injuries, are expected to make their debuts next week.  The JV boys were led by Perry Gorelik for 2 1/2 miles, even though he had a swollen lip from being stung earlier.  Dan Birzak was able to pass Perry in the last 1/2 mile and earn a Varsity spot with a time of 19:48.  Including Varsity and JV, 13 OM boys broke 21 minutes and 3 OM girls broke 24 minutes.  Less then a month to the State Championships!

Autumn Classic Results from the North County Track Home Page

On Friday, Ocotber 6, the Scorps headed to the Autumn Classic with a goal to place as well or better than they did last year, 5th.  The Scorps did just that as they were led by Izzy (2nd) and Carldrickiss (11th).  OM finished 4th with 136 points behind Towson (favorite to win the 2A State Title), Loyola (private school), and McDonogh (private school).  Centennial finished 5th while Hammond was 10th.  In the girls race OM placed 14th and had strong performances by the whole squad.  No scores were kept for the JV race but Dustin Allen (OM) had the best race of his high school career and closed within 8 seconds of a varsity spot.

OM and LR at Mt. Hebron

In the boys race, OM had a good day and beat Mt. Hebron on their home course.  Oakland Mills put 6 runners in the top 10.  Hebron did run well but they were without Foergione, their number 4.  The Scorps scored 27 while Hebron had 30 and Long Reach 78.  In the girls race Mt. Hebron looked very tough scoring 17 points to win.  The only girl to break up their top 7 was Amy Lee from Long Reach.  Oakland Mills and Long Reach battled it out for second place and OM pulled it off scoring 61 points while LR scored 62.  OM's Jason Forrest won the JV race by running a very patient and smart race.  He closed in on a varsity spot, missing it by only 6 seconds.

OM Tri vs Wilde Lake and Howard

In the boys race, the Wildcats from Wilde Lake rebounded from a sub par performance at the Hereford Invite and beat the Scorps on the zig zags at Oakland Mills High School.  The boys were not able to go undefeated in the tri meet schedule this year as they did last year.  However, the Scorps had better times then they had last week but Wilde Lake had 6 of the top 9 places and won 23 to 34 while Howard was 3rd with 85.  The girls also placed 2nd to Wilde Lake and beat Howard.  The scores were 28 to 43 to 56.  Allison Densmore broke 24 minutes and moved up to the 4th fastest Freshmen ever at Oakland Mills.  The JV boys ran last and the Scorpions broke the Wilde Lake winning ways.  A Wilde Lake runner did win the race but Oakland Mills took 5 of the next 6 places and won 21 to 34 and Howard was 3rd with 85.

Hereford Inv Results on trackfirst.com

OM Girls in Large School race and OM Boys in Elite race.

The girls team introduced 5 members to the Hereford course as only 2 current members had run the course before.  They have set their goal to compete on that same course in November, the State Meet.  Our #2 runner, Nicole Alpert, was sick and did not get to run and the team finished 35th in the large school race.  We were able to compete in the large school race because the boys competed in the Elite race.  We were the only 1A or 2A school in the Elite race and we finished 19th.  Our 5th runner, Joel Selby, just missed getting under 19 minutes and the hard work is beginning to pay off.  Comparing times to the small school race the boys would have been 5th as a team in that event.  All the JV runners who ran the course last year ran better this year and of course we have a slew of new runners who can't wait to compete at Hereford in the future.

OM Tri versus Glenelg and Long Reach

On Wednesday September 20, 2000 we hosted Glenelg and Long Reach for a tri-meet.  The Varsity boys ran first and we had 5 in the top 8 and won with 26 points.  Glenelg was second with 40 and Long Reach was third with 72.  The girls ran second and Glenelg had 5 of the first 6 places and won with 17 points.  We had 51 points and Long Reach only had 3 finishers.  The JV boys finished second with 34 points while Glenelg had 25 and Long Reach had 85.

Howard County Inv.

The teams missed the course walk at Centennial as the bus arrived an hour late.  The County Championships will be at Centennial later in the season and we can't wait to run there for the second time.  The highlight of the day was Izzy placing 4th overall.  2 South Carroll runners, the team champion and favorite to win the 3A state title, and Jon Goldsmith from Glenelg were the only 3 runners to beat him.

The Scorpions went to the Interstate Classic at Clear Spring High School for the first time on Saturday September 9, 2000.  It was a very competitive meet with five state championship teams from 1999 competing.  The girls competed first and were led by Freshmen Allison Densmore.  Two other newcomers, Nicole Alpert and Leigh Beaman, were right behind Allison.  Sachele Edwrads, Erica Robinson and Daisha Amos completed the girls squad that finished 11th out of 14 teams in the small school division, Mercersburg Academy was first.  The girls did not field a full team until October last year.  The boys were led by Izudin Mehmedovic (Izzy), 10th overall and 4th in the small school division.  Ricky McGinnis was the Scorps 2nd runner followed by scorers Sean McGehee, Riley Jennifer and Joel Selby.  Mark Grgurich and Carldrickiss Haymon ran together to complete the Varsity team.  They placed 3rd in the small school division, Glenelg was first.  The JV boys had five boys within a 16 second span, all in the 21's.  Kyle McGehee led the group.  There were 19 Scorpion finishers in the boys JV race.  That is right the team has grown, there are close to 50 Scorpion XC runners this year and the 1st two boys and the 1st three girls this weekend are new to the team.
