Popularizing Math?

On: Hong Song-Dae's "Jung-Suk" (Principles) Series

by Kang Song-Young

I would like to tell you about "The Way of Math"--written by Mr. Hong Song-Dae. Maybe, most Korean people of this generation have had this book and have studied math from this series. These books have made Mr. Hong very rich. Mr. Hong produced the series in the 1960's. However, the numbers of the books sold per year does not decrease; but have even increased, over the years. I have seven different levels, myself: 1) Basic Math-/A; 2) Basic Math-/B; 3) Basic Math-1/C; 4) Basic Math-2; 5) High Level Math-/A; 6) High Level Math-/B; 7) High level Math-1/C.

This series is the 'Bible' of high school math curriculum, in Korea. All of the key information covered in high-school math--such as Matrix, Calculus, Integers, and Geometry--all categories are written-up in this series.

In the 1960's, in the way of math books, nothing was adequate--because of the interruptions of the Korean war, perhaps. Mr. Hong worked in a Hak-won, then (Hak-won: an after-school tutoring institute). But he was not a teacher, there. His job was to do some small tasks, like copying. Nonetheless, he came to see that--for the development of the Mathematics ability of Korean high school students--a new, good math book had to be made.

So Mr. Hong Song-Dae collected files from all over Korea. He felt, in time, that there was a lack of adequate files in Korea, even. So he finally collected problems and notation files from Japanese books, too; all with the mind to make a better book for Korean high-school students.

I think that he has, indeed, raised the Mathematics ablility of Korean high-school students. Thank you Mr. Hong. We really appreciate your efforts.
