I have one older brother. He is five years older than me. He is now a Marine boy. My brother is special to me. But this "special" word does not mean a feeling like unto a treasure. The idea suggests another meaning of "special."
When I was young, my mother and my father and my grandmother and my grandfather always said "An older brother is the 'father' when the father isn't around; so you have to obey your brother." And I said "yes". When I was young, I didn't know what that "yes" meant, but after my older brother entered middle school, I became the man who would know that meaning.
From my older brother's entering middle school, he became very strict on me, and would give much extra homework to me. When I was in elementry school , I did not study so much, and would only play soccer with friends--for over five hours per day. Then I could not do homework, and I was always hit by him. So I hated him. But my parents were also on the same team, with him: because the older brother is the father, when my father isn't home. Unfortunately, my father would go out to work in the morning and come back home late at night; theb most of the time, when I was child, my brother was my father. And I cannot have imagined that a younger brother could fight with an older brother, like other children might fight.
Now my thinking is changed. I didn't know how good a powerful brother is for a younger brother. The reason I could attend KMLA and that I can go on to Seoul National University is: thank's to the help of my brother. He became my light-tower. In the future, after my parents shall have passed away. There will be no confusion, because my brother, as a pillar, can keep our family centered. Maybe for this reason did my parents exact obedience from me for my brother.
Nowdays, perhaps because of the effects of Western culture, the verticals relationship beteween older brother and younger brothers is weakened. Younger brothers deal with older brother like friends, only. Younger brothers should rely upon older brother and older brother should rise to the responsiblity. Moreover, in this way the warmth of law and order in the family becomes right. So, this year, on the Lunar New Year's Day, I shall also bow to my brother after bowing to my parents.
