DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHICH SUFFIXES YOU NEED TO FORM A RELATIVE CLAUSE IN TURKISH? |
|
|
|
***** If the relativized noun is the subject of its clause like in "the man who goes to the cinema" not in "the man whom everybody likes": THEN YOU HAVE TO ATTACH EITHER:
-(y)An (FOR PAST AND PRESENT) OR -AcAK (FOR FUTURE)
TO THE VERB OF THE RELATIVE CLAUSE
Example: ocuk her gn futbol oynar.(The child plays football every day) O ocuk hasta oldu.(That child became (has become) sick.)
ocuk= child oynar=play(oyna)+r(simple pres) hasta=sick oldu=become(ol)+du(past) her gn= every day
SO NOW YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO SAY "THE CHILD WHO PLAYS FOOTBALL EVERY DAY HAS BECOME (became) SICK"
THE VERB OF THE RELATIVE CLAUSE IS "OYNA"..
SO IT BECOMES>>>>>>>> OYNAYAN...
WE HAVE TO PLACE THE RELATIVIZED NOUN (THE NAME OF THE PERSON OR THE THING THAT WE DESCRIBE) JUST AFTER THE VERB IN THE RELATIVE CLAUSE..
SOOOO...... YOU SAY.......
"HER GN FUTBOL OYNAYAN OCUK HASTA OLDU"
IF YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SAY "THE CHILD WHO WILL PLAY FOOTBALL HAS BECOME SICK" THEN YOU WOULD HAVE TO SAY: " FUTBOL OYNAYACAK OCUK HASTA OLDU."
***** If the relativized noun is the object of its clause like in "the man whom everybody likes" THEN....
YOU HAVE TO USE EITHER
-DIK (FOR PAST AND PRESENT) OR -AcAK (FOR FUTURE)
Example: Ben dn bir ocuk grdm.(I saw a child yesterday) O ocuk Simdi hasta.(That child is sick now)
dn: yesterday grdm= see (gr) +d(past)+m(1.sg.) Simdi: now hasta:sick
TRY TO SAY " THE CHILD THAT I SAW YESTERDAY IS SICK NOW."
SO.....THE VERB OF OUR RELATIVE CLAUSE IS "GR".. YOU HAVE TO ATTACH -DIK SUFFIX SINCE IT MUST BE IN THE PAST...GRDK...BUT IT IS NOT ENOUGH..YOU ALSO HAVE TO MENTION WHO SAW THE CHILD..TO DO THAT YOU ATTACH A POSSESSIVE SUFFIX TO THE END..IN THIS CASE IT IS ME WHO SAW THE CHILD SO, THE POSS. SUFFIX MUST BE 1ST PERSON SINGULAR WHICH IS -(I)m....and DONT FORGET THE FACT THAT THE LAST LETTER " K" BECOMES " G" (SOFT G) WHEN A SUFFIX STARTING WITH A VOWEL IS ATTACHED TO IT... FINALLY----->WE HAVE "grdGm"
AND.....the sentence : Dn grdGm ocuk Simdi hasta.
IF YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SAY " THE CHILD I WILL SEE TOMMORROW IS SICK NOW" THEN YOU WOULD HAVE TO SAY "YarIn (TOMORROW) greceGim ocuk Simdi hasta.
