History
The History of Omega Beta Phi begins at the nations largest high school. Its funny when you think about it a college sorority starting in a high school, well that how the story of Omega Beta Phi begins. G. Holmes Braddock senior High School home the Bulldogs, a school of pride and excellence. The color Blue, Silver and White covered the hallways and the students kept school pride within their Academics and extra-curricular activities. In the L-Wing the sounds of music and harmony reigned throughout the hallways gave a sense of peace throughout the student body. In room L-122 the chorus room, Sharon Caldera was the president of the schools chorus program, in which she had the opportunity to meet her friends Isabel Garces, Madelyn Garces and Elizabeth Diaz. Isabel and Madelyn were sisters and Elizabeth was Madelyns best friend since middle school. Each day after class, Sharon would meet her friend Monika Soto for lunch and Isabel would head to yearbook class in room H-109. Isabel worked on the yearbook under the direction of her long-term friend Jose Otero, who was the Editor of the ENTHEOS yearbook. After school Isabel, Madelyn, Elizabeth, Sharon and Jose would help one another in any projects that needed to be fullfilled. After graduation, they remained friends and went off to college together.
As the Fall semester began at Florida International University (FIU), Jose was given the opportunity to start a yearbook program. Jose turned to his friends Isabel and Sharon and asked for their help in accomplishing this goal. Sharon had never worked on a yearbook staff, but accepted the opportunity to become the clubs editor and Isabel the sports editor. In addition to the staff, Dyana Nieto, Editor in Chief of the South Miami High School yearbook, decided to become the Faculty and staff editor. As it became spring, Jose received a bid into Pi Kappa Phi fraternity when the national office decided to colonize a chapter at FIU. The thought of becoming Greek had never crossed their minds until Jose decided to go Greek. Suddenly little by little numerous members of the Greek community decided to become part of yearbook staff such as Phi Mu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Mu, Phi Sigma Sigma, Alpha Xi Delta and Delta Phi Epsilon.
On October 3, 2000, in the middle of the yearbook deadline Jose arrived soaking wet in the yearbook
office located in GC-317, where Sharon and Isabel were working diligently on completing their work. Suddenly a flood warning was placed on FIU and the campus was closed for the intense flooding. Sharon, Isabel and Jose were stuck in the office, because the floodwater had risen so high that there was no way to get to their homes. Hours passed and the three sat in the office, wondering what to do. Jose started to put away his fraternity papers into his desk. Unexpectedly Jose asks Sharon, why havent you gone Greek yet? Sharon responded him that there was no organization that appealed to her, it looks very fake and superficial, Isabel who was sitting next to her also agreed. Sharon said, I would go Greek if there was an organization that she felt that was right. Suddenly, Jose stares both at Sharon and Isabel with a sinister smile and says, why dont you create your own sorority? Sharon and Isabel turn to each other before looking at Jose. HOW? screams Sharon. You have to create a name first replied Jose. Jose begins to outling on the dry erase board the Greek Alphabet. He stares at it and carefully draws the letter Omega. Isabel states that she likes the letter Phi. So then Jose combines Omega and Phi together. Suddenly Sharon noticing something is not right. We need a normal letter in between Omega and Phi. How about Omega Beta Phi? A deadsilence entered the room and everyone said, Yes! Okay we have a name, now we need colors. Jose said Why dont you make them Braddock colors, since Isabel and you are the founders and that is your alma-mater, it will add some type of history and meaning. Both Sharon and Isabel agreed. The next step was finding people to join Omega Beta Phi. Sharon picks up the phone and calls their high school friend: Monika Soto. Monika agreed to join for she had always wanted to be a member of a sorority and be involved.
It began getting late; Sharon invited Jose and Isabel to her house to stay over so they had a place to sleep that night. Luckily Isabel had an Isuzu Rodeo that could be driven throughout the high floodwaters at FIU. The storm that hit Miami that day knocked out the electricity in FIU. The only lights came from
the moon and stars that night guiding them out of the campus. While Sharon, Isabel and Jose were attempting to leave FIU, an older mans car was stuck in the floodwaters. Isabel, Sharon and Jose jumped out of the car to help the old man. The man got stuck because he was looking for his daughter who happened to be attending FIU as well. The man was Eternally grateful and thanks Sharon and Isabel. When they arrived at Sharons house Isabel turns to Sharon and sayscall Elizabeth Diaz and Madelyn my sister I know they would want to join as well. Sharon called Elizabeth and she agreed. Isabel called Madelyn who also agreed. Finally, the first five members of Omega Beta Phi were chosen. That night Sharon, Isabel, Monika, Elizabeth, Madelyn and Jose took an oath until November 3, 2000 Omega Beta Phi would not be publicized to the Greek Community.
Carolina Palacios was a prior member not only to the VISION yearbook but also to another Sorority. Carolina became a member of Kappa Theta Sorority at FIU (which later on became Alpha Omicron Pi at FIU). She decided to go into Kappa Theta when her chance on becoming part of formal recruitment was discouraged by her parents. Afterwards, Carolina and her best friends met with some girls of Kappa Theta. They were all extended bids and became sisters of the organization.
