A Midnight Wedding
Within a quiet breath, the evening was brought upon the world. The sun fought to bring its self to rest as the moon woke from its slumber. The skies were clear enough to see stars dancing in the heavens as soft shades of blues and purples colored the universe. And in this small silent town on a street as old as the state, a house stood on the side of a hill. It over looked the cemetery of forgotten people from the past. A light was lit on one window and there, within its glow, I sat listening to the evening news on the television. The clock over the fire place bonged, it was 6:00 PM and I was bored. Nothing to do as usual and it would only get worse as time passed on through the night. I looked out the window for a brief moment in hopes something would happen, some bit of excitement in this other wise drab town, but nothing. My eyes fought to keep open and my body relaxed under the weight of my robe. Slowly, I started to drift off to sleep and I was not about to stop myself when the clock then bonged at 7:00 PM. Only an hour had passed yet seemed to be forever. I lay my head on the arm of the sofa and sigh and again let myself drift off. Another lazy evening and night in my quaint little life.

When I opened my eyes next, I looked out the window. I'm not sure what woke me but I had a feeling. Something was about to happen. Had my wish come true? I would soon find out.
I uncurled my legs from their relaxed position and stood facing the big bay window on the far side of the living room. It looked out over a small hill which the moon was shining with all its glory down upon. I could see something move just over the hill and out of sight then I heard it. A howling of a wild dog or wolf maybe. I turned to see if the French doors were closed and breathed in relief when I seen they were. The crackling of the fire scared me a bit but I recovered from that only to get a cold chill when I could hear what seemed to be mumbling of voices.

Out here at this time of night? Never have I had a visitor or even seen a car pass by this end of town this late. Gathering my nerves and checked to see who it could be but found nothing, not a soul. I decided to go get something to drink. Opening the icebox and grabbing a cold Coors in hopes that something would sooth that feeling that tugged at the back of my neck. Letting the chill of the sweet beer hit the spot, I shrugged my shoulders and figured it was just a bad day at work that had me on edge.

Back in the living room, the late night movie was on and I sat close to the fire and watched. One of my favorite old movies and I had waited all week to see it. I just happened to look out the bay window again when I seen what I thought to be two figures walking down the hill headed toward the cemetery which was between my house and the far hill to the north. Ok, I know I haven't had enough to drink to make me see things so I got up and went up stairs to get dressed. If something was about to happen, I wanted to see it for myself.

Running to the front room, I stood with my cloths in hand trying to get dressed without taking my eyes off the hill side where the figures were seen. After getting dressed, I stood there watching, waiting in hopes I would see it again. I ran down the stairs and looked for the flashlight and grabbed my jacket. Going out the back kitchen door, I hope to get into the cemetery unseen by anything. I managed to get past my dog, Tonka which was sleeping inside his dog house. Instead of opening the back gate, I climbed over it and took off running as fast as I could go without making a sound. The night air had grown cold and I could see my breath in small clouds of steam as I would try and breath quietly.

I found myself in the middle of the cemetery at a headstone mark for the family of Gilford. It was big enough so I stayed there for a bit before moving again. I needed to catch my breath and find out where the figures had gone too. I could hear voices again but still not clear to where they were coming from. You have to understand, the cemetery is in a deep and small valley so sound plays tricks on ones mind. So I listened harder and looked all around.
