A Walk With The Devil
A Short Story

and
passion for the weak."

They all were friends for as long as they could remember. John, Chris, David and lori, neither related but never apart. Teen age years for them were something a bit strange, things happened that would always set off a chain reaction of challanges for all four as if always being tested. At times, they wondered if their friendship would hold up to the stress, but it never failed them and matters would be solved. All now in their early 20's and in classes together at the University of Belray and the farthest they have ever been from the small town of Apple Cove. John had noticed changes in the two girls as if they have found something they liked but knew their families would never aprove. Both Chris and Lori started dressing in dark cloths and wearing deep, dark makeup. Lori went as far as to dye her blonde hair to a deep pitch black and Chris, already having black hair, tipped the ends a bright red. David really never notices such changes but this time he did and John and David enjoyed the new look on the girls.

The week was almost at an end and John had planned a small party at his and Davids house. John told David to make sure the girls knew of the party and to find out if they wanted any spacific type of drinks. After class was over, David ran after the girls, wrapping his arms around them he asks...you both are coming to the party this weekend, right? Lori looks at Chris and lowers her head, Chris shrugs her shoulders and tells David she's not sure but will call later to let him know. David smiles and kisses both the girls cheek and takes off to his next class. At the end of the day, John catches up with David and they stand outside waiting for the two girls like always. Hours pass and neither girl has been seen and the guys go to check to see if they had went home early. Knocking on the door of the little apartment, John listens to see if he can hear movemnt inside.

Are they even home John?

I'm not so sure Dave..but this isn't like them to leave school without leaving a messege for us.

Maybe something happened to one of them.

Maybe....I just hope everything is ok with them.

Lets go back to the house..maybe they will call...Chris said she would.

Your right..come on.

Later that night, while the guys watch TV, the phone rings and Chris is on the other end. Nothing was said about a problem so John took it that all was well with them but still he was worried.

Is everything ok Chris?

Yes John..everything is fine, why?

We waited for you girls afer school but you two never showed up then we went to your apartment and knocked and no answer..we got worried.

Oh..sorry, my and Lori had some shopping to get done and we left school early. You know..the whole food needed in the house thing.

John laughs, Yes..I know..well, how about the party?

Sure, we will be ther..but can we bring some of our friends?

No problem..you know their all welcome.

Good, see you tomorrow at school then.

Ok..talk to ya later.

After hanging up the phone, John stopped to think, why would Chris ask if friends could come knowing that all their friends would already be invited? John talked to David about it and he didn't have any ideas. The following morning, the guys meet the girls on the way to school and walk with them. None speak but John watches the girls as they glance at each other and just nod their heads as if sending hidden messeges back and fourth. David has a class firs thing in the morning with Chris and John asks him to find out if there is anything going on. David talks with her in class and she asures him that nothing is wrong. John meets up with Lori after first period and talkes with her pushing the subject that there may be a problem that the girls are hiding from them, but again, Lori asures John that everything is ok. John catches up with them in fifth period, a class they all have together, he sits behind Chris and passes notes to her. She reads them and sends them back with little messeges that he is looking for a problem that doesn't exist. After school, the two girls corner John and tell him to let up, that there is nothing wrong and that he has become over protective and paranoid for nothing. John stands there watching as the girls walk off leaving him and David there standing in the shadows of the trees in the park.
