Roxby Downs/Olympic Dam

Owned by BHP Billiton, the Olympic Dam uranium-copper mine is currently undergoing planning for a massive expansion. If it proceeds, the expansion will make the mine the largest open cut mine in the world, with a hole some 3km wide and 1km deep.

Honeymoon Uranium Mine

Owned by Canadian-South African mining company SXR Uranium One, Honeymoon has now successfully applied to commercially mine uranium near Broken Hill in SA’s east. While ‘community consultation’ has now concluded, you can read about the issues surrounding the mine here.

 

Beverley Uranium Mine

Operated by Heathgate Resources, a subsidiary of US nuclear megacorporation General Atomics, Beverley mines uranium on Adnyamathanha traditional country in the Gammon Ranges, north-east of Leigh Creek. Like the proposed Honeymoon mine, Beverley employs the controversial ‘acid in-situ leach’ mining technique.

Maralinga

2006 marks 50 years since the first atomic bomb was detonated at Maralinga in SA’s west. The cumulative radioactive fallout from these British tests fell over much of Australia, and the civilians, military personnel and Indigenous communities directly impacted by the tests are yet to be appropriately acknowledged or compensated.
