I believe it was Master Cariadoc of the Bow who made the comment that we can't excel at every area in the SCA. We each have our areas of expertise and interest, and in all the rest, we just do what we can to minimize the modernity. So many of us are satisfied that we've come up with items that may not be authentic in every detail, but which can pass at a glance, or at the very least, are not obtrusively modern.
My lord husband does not excel at woodworking, yet we've come up with many pieces of furniture for camping that are quite passable. A few have won raves as well as contests. I believe that part of our success is knowing our own limits. Malcolm does not own a table saw, so everything he makes must be cut using a sabre saw or a jigsaw. I won't use power tools. I sew and I design, but I don't saw.
We've made covers for Coleman chairs that have appeared in Court many times ("oh, Her Excellency/Grace/Highness is without a chair, can we borrow yours for Court because they look so nice?"), a pretty passable tourney table with a shelf underneath (you have to wonder why trestle tables DIDN'T have shelves. What were they thinking?), a four-poster bed for camping, pavilions, and a day shelter made from a amrket umbrella. None of these were difficult. None of them took advanced engineering or rocket science. Most were done in under a week.
All of these will appear here in the near future. I have photos of some, but need to scan the rest in as drawings. I've got a handout done for the pavilions, but that will take a fair amount of work to load it all onto my site. So have patience, gentle reader, and all will be revealed. |
