What Isn't Punk? What
Is?
6 months ago I thought I knew what punk was, but sadly it
wasn't so. I knew what punk wasn't but I didn't exactly
know what punk was. Punk isn't holding a skateboard or
wearing stud bracelets. That's merely appearance. Punk
isn't an appearance. Now I know what you're
thinking-Then, what is punk? Punk is a state of mind, a
lifestyle; punk is thinking for yourself.
"Punk ain't no religious cult,
Punk means thinking for yourself,
You ain't hardcore if you spike your hair
When a jock still lives inside your head."
-Dead Kennedys 'Nazi Punks Fuck Off'
Anybody can have a mohawk and wear a studded leather
jacket but only some can have a mohawk, wear a studded
leather jacket and think for themselves.
The Punk Movement
Punk was never meant to be violent or hateful. When the
punk movement took place back in the '70's, it was
something different, it was a change to pop culture. To
be different was frowned upon and for some, change was
scary. When the legendary Sex Pistols released 'God Save
The Queen', people pissed their pants. The lyrics and
music were outrageous and radical, so outrageous and
radical that that song was banned from England. People
had always been against government but none dared to
speak out against it. Finally, someone did and that
sparked a revolution. If punks were ever violent or
hateful, it was to defend themselves against the confused
trendy fucks that didn't understand the punk movement.
People that go around trashing things and insulting
people for fun all the time aren't punk, they're just
careless assholes. Speaking up for what you believe and
questioning authority to make a difference is one thing
but doing it out of spite is another thing.
