Interview With Lackass Adolescent
Pictured above: Lackass Adolescent
I had to do this for Journalistic Writing so I decided, why the hell not share it with you all. I'm "Sarah" and the person whom I interviewed is "Lackass Adolescent". And that is all you need to know. So, go and enlighten yourselves.
Sarah: You listen to music, correct? Lackass Adolescent: why yes, yes i do Sarah: What is your favorite genre? Lackass Adolescent: Old School Punk Rock, mainly from the LA and Orange county region Sarah: What do you like about old school punk rock? Lackass Adolescent: well Sarah, the thing i find most appealing about this particular genre of music is the fact that it has so much energy. Another aspect that makes it appealing to me is that it has a very raw and unrefined sound to it, not to mention lyrics that i can relate to and enjoy. The best thing about punk rock is that its basically kids making music for kids, which is always a winning combination. Sarah: What are some of your favorite musicians/bands? Why? Lackass Adolescent: The Offspring, the adolescents, the germs, the descendents, TSOL and most recently the Simpletones. Out of all of the bands ive listed, a punk afficianado might be quick to state that The Offspring arent a real punk band, or that that they arent anymore. The fact that they dont fit in so well with the rest of the bands listed above is no shock to me. I will not try and argue that The Offspring are the embodiment of true punk rock, but i will say and hold steadfast to the fact that their roots lay in punk rock, for if one listened to their earlier material they would surely be convinced that the offspring have punk rock roots. All classifications aside, i like these bands for their energy as i previously stated. i like the image and messages that those bands employ, and most of all they put heart into their music. Sarah: Oh yes, I do agree...How do you feel punk rock has influenced your life? Lackass Adolescent: well, its influenced my life in a couple of ways. First of all, its taught me how to accept more people for who they are and not to judge them based on their looks. Thats the thing about punk rock, there are some really smart people in the scene but maybe they have a mohawk or dyed hair, or something different about the way they look. There are people on the streets or in school who will look at them and call them a degenerate or something to that affect and will proceed to heckeling them or just making fun of them. im speaking from first hand experiance. ive been called a loser, and freak, and some suff that really isnt very nice just because i have dyed my hair, and the way i dress. On the other hand, its cool being a bit different, and not knowing what people are going to say. Sarah: Ah, those basturds...But anyway, on with the interview...What does the term 'punk rock' mean to you? Or 'punk' for that matter. Lackass Adolescent: well, the meaning it has to me might not be the same thing it means to someone else, but thats what i think is cool about punk, it suits just about everyones needs. To me its a type of music that that i can relate to and take refuge in. Sarah: But is punk just a genre of music or do you believe it could be a lifestyle as well? Lackass Adolescent: well, that depends on the individual. If one needs it to be a lifestyle then it could be, if someone wants to look at it as just a genre of music thats fine too, just as long as they dont exploit it. Personally i think its a bit of both for me. I would die for the music, but i dont totally buy into the whole punk lifestyle thing. I just live like i want to live, and if that goes agaist what even the punk scene believes it, i really dont care Sarah: Ah, I see. I believe you play bass...or at least own a bass guitar. Have you ever thought about starting your own band? Lackass Adolescent: haha, constantly. Like you said i own a bass, but i really dont play it. Its not cause i dont like it, its basically because im a bit lazy and also because i have no people to start a band with. i havent given up hope yet though. Im sure i can find some people who know nothing about playing their instruments who wanna start a punk band. But thats another cool thing about punk rock, it dosent matter if you know how to play or not, its all about learning and having fun while you go Sarah: Amen....Hmm...What do you think of the DIY ethic? Does it appeal to you? Lackass Adolescent: Oh im all for it. As far as punk goes DIY is the only way to go. Its the most honest and ethical way to release music. Furthermore the music sounds WAY better when its recorded. Sarah: Now, tell me about the OC scene. Do you think it's probably one of the best places for those who are into punk rock to go? Lackass Adolescent: Well, it depends on what kind of punk each person in into. If one like more hardcore punk then the east coast is probably the best place. But in my case, i like more relaxed light hearted melodic punk rock, so Orange County, in that case is the best place. However, in the Orange County scene like every other you will find people who truely care about it, and then some who are what we refer to as "poseurs" who are people who like the music just for the fashion. All in all Ornge County is an awesome place for punk rock. There are shows very frequently and most of them are awesome. Sarah: OC sounds like a rad place. Alright, last question...and I bet you're glad too. Heh...If you were to give some advice to a person who was new to the punk scene, what words of wisdom would you share with that person? Lackass Adolescent: Well, if in fact you are truely devoted to the punk scene then be prepared for some hassle, even from within the punk scene. of course not everyone is gonna give you problems, just the people who think they are the epitome of punk rock...i really dont like those people. Most of all have fun and dont try to hard to be punk, it'll come naturally if its there.
