My 1987 Buick Grand National

This site has moved to its new home at www.fastbuick.com!! Please update your book marks!

I bought this 87 GN Aug 2000 from a local dealer that specializes in muscle cars. I traded my 85 Olds 442 in to help get this car. I miss the 442 but I really like the GN :) The car had 127K miles and was all stock (the drivetrain that is) It had an "upgraded" stereo system circa 1987 as well as a K40 remote radar detector and DEI alarm from the same time period. It also had a Cellular One car phone mounted along with the antenae that is on the rear window. Everything was there that should be. The car has been repainted at some point, and whoever put the badges back on messed up a little bit. The trunk badge is on the wrong side and one of the fender badges is just a tad crooked. Also, one of the hood "3.8L SFI Turbo" badges was an all chrome one thats supposed to be on a reagular Turbo Buick trunk. Half of that fell off after a few weeks so it got replaced with the proper one.

Car Updates:

7-23-02

As mentioned below, I went to the dyno. At the rear wheels I have 283hp and 459lbs of torque :)

Since the dyno day I've added a PowerPlate and thats it as far as mods. Haven't done a whole lot. My turbo shield and MAF pipe have been powdercoated silver and look really sharp. I've got a bunch of pictures I'll add but I need to make them web friendly for the bandwidth challenged, hehe. I have pics of my car and some group pics from some events. Good stuff. Hopefully I can get them up in a decent time frame....

4-15-02

I finished up my springs. I now have Eibach's in all four corners. The car handles and looks great. There was a 1.5" drop overall. I would like to thank Brian J. for helping install the front springs.

I figured out the knock problem. My alky pump was dying and eventual crapped out. Its been repaired and is now working wonderfully. SMC helped me trouble shoot over the phone to diagnose the problem. They then repaired it and shipped it back at no cost. GREAT support. If anyone wants an alky kit, talk to Steve at SMC! I'm a very happy customer.

April 27 I'm heading out to the track in hope of breaking into the 12's. The 28th is dyno day for the club. So my next update should be with times and dyno numbers!

3-15-02

A few goodies have been added. I picked up a late model Delco radio/CD player. Its gray and matches the interior well. Most people will probably think its original. I also have a Mease Big-Neck intercooler. I have mixed feelings about it at the moment. Installation was a pain. I had some major fitment issues for some reason even though its a stock i/c for the most part. Right after install I took the car out and felt an improvement according to my butt dyno. I have developed a knock problem so Im trying figure it out before I have any more WOT fun.

I've upgraded springs. I first went with Moog springs to save money. I wanted to drop the car about an inch to get rid of the gap betweem the tire and fender lip. The Moog's I went with dropped the front about .5" and the rear didnt change. The rear also seemed softer than the 15 year old springs I pulled. The fronts, 570# spring rate felt good. I now have the Eibach Pro-Kit springs. The rears are installed and are exactly what I wanted. The fronts are going in this weekend. I hope to get some pics of the car after install and while the car is still clean :) I have also installed ARP wheel studs on the rear since I need a spacer with the Nitto's.

12-26-01

Been a while since an update. I've done lots of stufff so here goes...

  • CompCams 980 Valve Springs
  • Metco Driveshaft Safety Loop
  • SMC Alcohol Injection Kit
  • Nitto Drag Radials on the rear. 275/50/15
  • Welded Driver's Side Header
  • Underhood Braces
  • Engine Tie-Down Strap
  • New Chip; Stock 22 degree chip but low fan on at 170F and TCC lockup at 48mph for better city driving.
  • Console overlay. Black anodized aluminum with the Buick Motorsports logo. This thing looks great and the craftsmanship is amazing. I got it from BFH (Buick From Hell). He makes all kinds of custom fab stuff for turbo buicks. Check out his site!

The car has been to the track a couple time. First was Oct 26 at the Buick vs. Ford Shootout in Noble, OK. Got my best at the time of 13.4 @ 102mph. I had pathetic 2.0x 60' all day. Just a couple weeks ago, Dec 9 at Mid-America Dragway, I got my new and current best of 13.1 @ 101mph. I had a 1.88 60'. It was a test and tune day so I was trying a few different burnout/launch techniques. This was a 4 or 5 lb launch and the Nitto's hooked up really well and didnt spin.

More mods :-)

  • Casper's Fuel Pump Hot Wire Kit
  • Accufab Adj Fuel Pressure Regulator
  • Rear Seat Brace Kit
  • Front Frame Braces
  • Passenger side valve cover breather by-pass
  • Homemade Adj Wastegate
  • ATR 2.5" Stainless Steel exhaust w/ ATR PitBull mufflers
  • Casper's Knock Gauge
  • VDO Boost Gauge
  • Custom Street Chip

Things I've paid for but have yet to arrive at my door: CompCams 980 valve springs, driveshaft safety loop and SMC Alcohol Injection Kit.

6-9-01
Well, I've done a few things. Here's the mods to this point:

  • Walbro 340 Fuel Pump
  • 160F Thermostat
  • VDO Oil Pressure and Water Temp gauges in a twin Console Gauge Holder
  • MAF Pipe
  • 9" K&N Cone Filter

Things that I have that will be going on in the next couple weeks:

  • Fuel Pump Hot Wire Kit
  • Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator
  • Rear Seat Brace Kit

Maintanance things done:

  • Timing Chain with Steel Gears
  • Oil (Duh!)
  • Harmonic Balancer; Discovered the old one was cracked when changing the timing chain. It was cracked BAD. Got lucky and caught it before destroying the front of the engine!!

3-20-01

I pulled the Denon head unit and the amp for the rear 6x9 Polk speakers. I also pulled the front 3.5" off brand speakers. I dropped a factory delco tape/radio in and some new Infinity 3.5" in the dash. The Polk's stayed. The door speakers are unknown brand but I left them as is also. I yanked out the car phone and its million feet of wireing. All that remains of it is the antenae base on the rear window. Other than the basic maintanance items (and a MAF sensor dying while out away from home, what fun) the car is still all stock.

Future:

I have a Walbro 340 fuel pump and hotwire kit that will hopefully be going in this weekend (3-24-01). Also a 160 degree thermostat. I have an oil pressure and water temp guage awaiting a console guage holder which was out of stock when I ordered all this stuff a couple weeks ago. I may install them anyway and have them rest on under the radio where the holder would go until it comes in.

The track:

I took the car to the Buick vs. Ford Shootout in Noble, OK in Nov 2000. It was my first time drag racing so I was nervous and excited at the same time. For my first time out I ran a best of 14.6 and beat a SHO to take the first Buick win. WooHoo! I'm sure the car would have run better had I driven better. I was basically leaving just off idle. Hey, I was new to this and was mostly concerned with staging and making sure I left at the right time. It was fun though! There are some pics from this event on the picture page.
