A Happy Cat Now!

Mews, my name is BlackJack, and I am a happy cat now! I was so very lucky, I
found a home after being on the streets. Let me tell you my story.
I used to have a home, and even wore a collar, although it was a dog collar,
it meant I had a place to live and food to eat. My owners at the time didn't
see fit to have me neutered, so I roamed the neighborhood, fighting with
other toms over female kitties in heat, staying out all night and living an
exciting if damgerous life. Then something happened, I no longer had owners,
never have been too sure what happened, but I lost my collar, and then became
a street kitty. Times became very hard then, it is tough on the streets for
an adult cat like myself, I was about 6 or 7 when all this happened, and
there were a lot of young stud tomcats out there too. I knew I needed a
home, even one where they would just feed me and give me water.
When I was living it up as a young tom, I had passed by a house where there
were kitties inside. I went to check it out, and the nice lady there put out
some food for me. I used to stop by periodically and grab a snack in between
romancing the girls. I began to wonder if this lady was still there. I had
gotten very thin, the summer of 2000 was a very hot and dry one. There was
little water, and even the birds were thin. Fighting had become dangerous, I
was now 8, and those young studs were getting the best of me.
One evening I went back to the house I remembered, and, lo and behold, that
same nice lady was still there. She saw how thin I was and ran for food and
water. Such a feast it was! I checked out the two cats in the house, one
looked a lot like me, and the other was a calico girl. Hey, maybe she would
like a pair of harlequin cats!
I began to go there every evening, and there was always water and food there
for me. The lady would come out and pet me, that was really nice, and I
enjoyed that petting and getting to hear a friendly voice. Time went on, and
the months passed, I was stopping by every night, and sometimes in the
morning too. She was calling me Little Friend by now, and although I thought
that a rather silly name for a tomcat, it was far better than "get out of
here" or "scram" which I heard a lot of those days.
Summer passed into Fall, and then into Winter. It was cold, and even though
I had fattened up some, I sure needed a home. The nice lady had fixed a
place outside, with a blanket and some boxes piled up to protect me from the
cold. But I had a goal now, to become an inside kitty.
I got even friendlier, and then got to come inside in the lady's arms, wow,
nice place, and the kitties inside didn't even hiss. This was going quite
well. It was almost Christmas, and I knew what I wanted from Santa Paws, a
home! But then I got into one more fight, and got my ear hurt. I didn't
feel so good, and stayed there in my bed more. One afternoon, the lady came
out and scooped me up and put me in a strange box with bars, then into the
car. Oh no, what now! We went to the vet's office, and I got jabbed with a
needle, and then heard happy voices, "he tests negative on everything, you
are very lucky!" I ended up staying there at the vet's for several
humiliating days, they removed my prize male possessions, and I had a bath,
but plenty to eat. Then here came the nice lady, and took me out of there,
and into my new home. Oh joy, oh rapture, I was an inside kitty!
That was at the end of December, and look how far I have come: a Duke in
CLAW, a wonderful girlfurriend kitty, Gingercats, and I am no longer skinny
and dirty, but fat and sleek, with a shiny coat. What a happy cat am I, to
have found such a loving home, and found a new name too. BlackJack seemed
much more fitting, and I was very glad to get a new masculine name to help me
cope with that operation. I am all settled in now, and so very happy to be
honored by being the Spotlight Kitty in OCS. If you see a stray kitty
outside, be sure and give it some food, you may find a wonderful new friend
and save the life of a kitty too!
Happy purrs,
BlackJack
