Atlas' Story

Spike

Atlas lay on his back in the sun thinking about Precious.
She was a beautiful red tabby that lived down the block.
Atlas had known her for several years as a friend but he
had never really got to know her in depth. Lately she had
been the focus of his thoughts. During a leisurely stretch,
he considered that at fifteen he knew his feelings were not
amorous. In fact, he had been spared all those mating felines
the wild toms mewed about. Those seemed more trouble than they
were worth. He was pretty sure that Precious had never been
mentionned in any of the tom's mewings. He liked that. So,
why now, why was he thinking about her all the time? True,
he was a very catsome yellow tiger striped tabby and he kept
himself in top physical condition. But, he had serious thoughts
about that gorgeous, lithesome creature. He wanted to know
everything about her. Could this be love? How could he tell her
about his feelings?

McGee

Hmm, Atlas thought, this is the month of February and the humans
push valentines, flowers and candies in their advertising on TV
and even on the computer. Could this be why I am thinking so much
about Precious? I have not seen her since Christmas when she came
to visit my human farfur with her meowmie. Hmm, my farfur and her
meowmie are very good friends. I wonder if farfur is thinking about
Precious' meowmie the same way that I am thinking about Precious?
The two humans share a love of felines and are always comparing
Precious and me in what we two do and say. Hmm, I wonder if...

Sam

I should ask farfur to invite Precious and her meowmie over here for
dinner and a nice visit? Humans like to talk over their dinner, and
then maybe Precious and I could get better acquainted too. Maybe I
could help farfur fix something very special. He could ask Precious's
meowmie what her favorite food is and we could serve that for Precious!
I know! I can serve Precious her dinner in that beautiful crystal dish
that farfur never uses. I know she would like that! Let's see. Her
favorite food, a crystal dish. Oh! I could...

McGee

go on and on about what I would do for her, but wait, first I must ask
farfur. Atlas found his farfur busy doing his laundry. Atlas asked,
"Farfur, I have not seen Precious and her meowmie since Christmas.
Valentine's Day is coming soon and I would like for you to invite them
here for a nice dinner. I would help you prepare the meal and clean up.
I really miss not seeing Precious because of wintertime. Remember our
walks we take in warm weather past her house when we stopped to visit
with her and her meowmie?

Farfur replied, "That is a great idea. I miss chatting with Precious'
meowmie too. I will call and ask if they will come. What day do you
think would be nice?"

"Oh, Farfur, Atlas replied, Valentine's Day, of course."

Farfur laughed and said, "Atlas, that is a day to give valentines and
show someone that you care about them."

"I care about my friend Precious and I wish to see her again. I really
miss her."

"OK, farfur replied. I have a love-sick cat on my hands. I will call
and invite them to dinner Thursday evening. Precious' meowmie will get
a big kick playing "Cupid" with me."

"Hmm, thought Atlas, maybe I can use a crystal goblet for catnip cider
and and some nice yankee candles and some...

Sam

And some tuna salad garnished with fresh grass blades. Oh!
I remember that Precious likes mayonnaise like I do so we can
have mashed potatoes mixed with mayonnaise. She will love that!
Now all I have to think of is a delicious dessert for Precious.
Maybe a whipped cream torte! Yes! Why, I'll bet that even farfur
and Precious's meowmie will like that.

Sam

What else? Oh, yes! Farfur said it is a time for giving Valentines
and gifts to show that you care for a person. I will have farfur
help me make a Valentine on the computer for Precious. While we're
doing that, maybe I could play cupid for farfur and tell him that he
should make a Valentine for Precious's meowmie. I know he likes her.
Kitties just know these things. Maybe I could...

McGee

Have farfur pick up some roses from the garden center.
Roses are a sign of love...probably pick yellow roses for friendship
which would be a pretty color. All four of us are friends. Hmm, have I
left out anything? What else do I need to make this an eventful
evening? Yeh, we need music! What CD shall we play on the player...

Sam

"Hmm, Atlas thought, 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' would be
a good choice of music because he had a friend who arranged to
play that song for a lady cat that he was interested in and she
thought it was so romantic that she said she would be his
Valentine.

McGee

Valentine's day finally came. Atlas and his Deowdie had the house
spic and span. A grand vase of roses was set in the middle of the
dining room table. Deowdie had even bought a lace tablecloth for
the table.

Both of them were very nervous. It was seven o'clock and time for
their two guests to arrive. The doorbell rang and deowdie hastened
to answer.

"My, don't you two girls look swell, he said. Let me take your wraps."
Deowdie then ushered them into the living room.

"The meal smells so good, exclaimed Precious' Meowmie.

I cannot wait to eat, Precious said.

Atlas escorted Precious to her chair. "We have our own special
raised seats for the occasion, mewed Atlas. Deowdie said that we
two felines will be able to eat at the dining room table and
adjusted the chairs for us with these large books."

Precious' Meowmie said to Deowdie, "You two gentlemen went to a lot
of trouble to make this an enjoyable evening. I wish that you had
invited us before. I was on the verge of inviting you and Atlas
into my home for dinner but thought that you would think that I
was too forward."

"I wish that you had invited us, said Deowdie. I guess that both
of us were too shy at the time. We have known each other for years
and had many good conversations about our two cats. I did not think
that you were interested in getting to know about me. It took Atlas
to finally break the ice between us by inviting Precious and you
over to dinner. He is a very smart cat."

"Yes, purred Precious, not only is he a smart cat, he is furry
handsome and polite too. We are going to have a great meal tonight
and we will get to know each other a lot better. Ah! Valentine's Day!
What a good start to a wonderful friendship, Atlas."

Precious rubbed noses with Atlas and the two parents blushed and
said in unison, "We think that we will pass on nose rubs." The two
then hugged each other and kissed.

"Humans have a funny way of showing affection, said Atlas. I like
nose rubs better." Both cats purred and purred and purred.

The story of Atlas was written from 03 February 2002 to
March 2002 and is dedicated to a beautiful yellow tabby,
Minnie, who attained the rank of Damsel of CLAW.
Minnie passed over the Rainbow Bridge on 06 June 2001.

The midi is playing "Valentine" recorded by Martina McBride.
The words to it are on our February OCS activity page.
