The firm of Downer & Company was formed in 1888 by Charles Downer, John Henderson and Charles William Ive.
The partners had previously operated from the same premises in Franklin Street, Adelaide, as aerated water and ginger beer brewers under the trading name of Crowder & Company.
Increase in trade saw the partners cramped for manufacturing space in Franklin Street, so they commissioned the building of a factory, office and warehouse in Waymouth Street, Adelaide.
The new premises located on the south side of Waymouth Street, corner of Bentham Street, was ready for occupation in 1891.
Downer & Company were also wine & spirit merchants. The business ceased to trade after 1925.
Maugham patent bottles featured date mid 1890s.
Downer & Co also used: Syphons; lamonts; codd's; and underglazed transfer ginger beers (white body - dark brown blob top). Most of Downer's bottles are hard-to-get. |
