William Paxton, formerly of Hindley St, Adelaide.
William Paxton was born in Brighton, Sussex, England in 1818 and died at his home in Palmerra Square, London on the 1st of September 1893. He arrived in Adelaide in 1840.
Paxton was one of early South Australia's prominent citizens.
In December 1843 he purchased 'Navarino House' in Hindley Street, Adelaide, where he established himself as a chemist and druggist. This was called 'Apothecary's Hall' and was described as being fitted up in the London style with his name in "china letter impervious to the climate". The description of the building in council assessments of 1847-1849 is a "Brick building, shop, dwelling, 2 storey double fronted shop and laboratory, alongside the Victoria Hotel". This was on town acres 51 and 54.
Bottles: Paxton was one of the few SA aerated water manufacturers who used Pointy Ended Soda bottles. One of his bottles has the embossing in cursive script writing, describing the manufacturers name and street address and the contents, making it unique in SA. |
