Lion Brewing & Malting Co Ltd, North Adelaide, transfer printed stone ginger beer c1917-1925
The substantial Lion Brewery of Jerningham St, Nth Adelaide, was built in 1872. It had an early reputation of brewing high quality sparkling ales, pale ales, stout, ginger beer and aerated water products. In the early days the brewery supplied beer to a substantial number of Lion Brewery owned hotels. Beer brewing at the Lion was discontinued in 1914. They then granted the Walkerville Brewing Company with the right to supply beer to their hotel chain. Aerated water and ginger beer production continued from the brewery until 1970. During it's history the Lion brewery used: ring & crown seal beers; codd patents; lamont patents; maugham patent bottles; glass dump soda's; riley patents; impressed and transfer printed ginger beers. Many of their bottles are embossed with the attractive Lion trade mark. There earliest known bottles date around 1880. |
