William Nathaniel Crowder. 1818 to 1898
William Crowder was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1818. He came to South Australia in 1839 on the ship Singapore and was at first employed in dairying at Lockleys, after which he left for the Victorian goldfields.
Unsuccessful in his search for gold he returned to South Australia and for 2 years, 1851 to 1852, conducted a store in Currie Street, Adelaide.
He commenced the manufacture of ginger beer in 1853 from the late premises of Alexander Malcolm a carrara water maker in Franklin Street, Adelaide. W.N. Crowder became one of the largest manufacturers of aerated waters in South Australia, operating until 1883, he then sold his company and retired to his mansion in Mitcham, SA.
