William Samuel Bailey,
aerated water manufacturer of Adelaide. 1866-1918

William was born on the Island of Guernsey, Eng, in 1844.

He arrived in Adelaide during the mid 1860s and commenced business as an aerated water manufacturer in Morphett Street.

In 1888 he moved to Gilbert Street, Adelaide, and established a small factory at the rear of the families general store and premises.

By 1908, extensive growth in business necessitated the building of a larger factory further east along Gilbert St. He operated until 1918, then leasing the premises and business goodwill to Cecil Knight who traded in the style of W.S. Bailey & Co. (Taking advantage of the established name.)

Bailey used: Codd's patent; maugham's patent; and riley patent bottles.
W.S. Bailey - bulge neck codd bottle would date around 1890.
Main & Son, dispensing chemist, King William St, Adelaide. (Blue bottle)

The founder of this business was William Main formerly a chemist of Old Kent Rd, England, who journeyed to South Australia around 1850 and commenced a pharmacy in King William Street, Adelaide.

Main went into partnership with fellow chemist William Geyer of Hindley Street, and enjoyed considerable prosperity from both establishments.

Main & Geyer's premises in Hindley St, were next door west of the well known and popular Exchange Hotel.

When William Main died in the 1880s, his widow and son William (jnr) continued to trade in the style of Main & Son. The old shop was located on the east side of King William St, between Rundle & Grenfell Streets, Adelaide.

Chemist blue would date around the mid 1890s.

Federal Co-Operative Mineral Waters & Cordial Co Ltd. Gilbert St, Adelaide, SA. 1910-1921

The Federal Co-Op was incorporated on the 12th of August 1910. The business came into existence after 130 hotel keepers had taken shares in the company.

The factory was situated on part town acre 637 Gilbert St, Adelaide.

Some of their bottles are unique to South Australia. They are the only South Australian company to have the Australian Flag embossed on their bottles. They had a dark green glass cork seal "Dump Ginger Beer" bottle, the only one of its kind in South Australia and were most probably amongst the last of the aerated water companies who used the maugham's patent (round-ender) as this bottle had fallen from favour by 1910 when the company commenced operations.

The Federal Co-Op used: Codd's patent bottles (with embossed flag); dark green dump glass soda (with embossed flag); maugham's patent; and underglazed transfer printed ginger beers.

Skittle shape crown seal soda (with embossed flag) would date c1911.
