Maughams patent bottles.
(top) Squat shaped bottle once belonging to Samuel Owen who dis-embarked the ship Northumberland at Port Adelaide in January 1864. At first Owen worked for a local bank as a messenger before joining with fellow Northumberland passenger Louis Johnson as partners in a Ginger Beer and Aerated Water making business from premises in Currie St, Adelaide, from 1869 to 1873.
In 1874 Samuel Owen purchased Henderson & Co's confectionery business in Hindley Street and conducted business on his own until his retirement in 1902.

Johnson & Owen bottles 1869-1873: Samuel Owen bottles 1874-1902:
Bottle 2 - A.A.W. & B. Co. Ld. belonged to the Adelaide Aerated Waters & Brewing Co Ltd of Angas St, Adelaide, which was formed in 1883 by a group consisting largely of Hotel-keeper share holders and other members of the general public.
The new company purchased the factory, machinery, and goodwill of former partners William Billin & Albert Wight who had operated a similar business in the style of Billin & Wight.
The A.A.W. & B. Co. Ltd. used a pointy ended soda; maugham's patent; lamont patent; codd's patent; and impressed stone ginger beer. Bottles used date from 1883 to 1897.
They sold out to the Co-Operative Mineral Waters Company Ltd in Aug 1898. |
