In his adult life he served his articles of apprenticeship in the chemist shop belonging to his father.
After further study at the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, Burden was ready to practice his chosen profession.
Apart from a year in San Remo, in Italy, where he worked under another English Chemist, Burden departed for South Australia arriving in 1883.
Within two years of his arrival, Burden had a fine Chemist Shop in a prime location on King William Street, Adelaide, SA.
In the year (2001) the name of Buden is still used by two pharmacies.
