William Paxton b. 1818 Brighton, Sussex, England, came to the infant colony of South Australia in 1840, and became one of the early prominent citizens serving as councillor for Adelaide in 1841 and 1850.
In December 1843 he purchased 'Navarino House' in Hindley Street, Adelaide, where he established himself as a chemist and druggist. This was called 'Apothecary's Hall' and was described as being "fitted in London style" with his name in "china letters impervious to the climate."
The description of the building in 1847 to 1849 is a "brick building, shop, 2 storey double fronted shop and laboratory, alongside the Victoria Hotel."
