to me, there are two reasons that may inspire poems:
- one, when I'm in love (with anything, doesn't have to be a person)
- two, when I lost love (or disappointed with anything, for that matter)
I rarely write poems now, so these are mostly old works of my school years.

as with plays, well, they're usually made for or based on certain events.
I often get ideas from legendary plays or movies, but other than those,
inspiration can be found anywhere.
books? I literally "eat" books... loads of 'em, can't live without 'em.
I finished the third book of Lord of The Rings trilogy in two days.
(but of course, it was christmas holiday... ^_^ )
