Hello class, and welcome to Defense Against the Dark Arts! Please excuse the mess. I haven’t had much time to decorate. I do have a fascination with dragons, if you haven’t noticed. Amazing creatures. . . Now, I had the lesson plan somewhere. . . ah! Here it is. Now, this class will infuse a little of the material from other classes, but the material will be relevant to Defense Against the Dark Arts. My first lesson is fairly simple and will help prepare you to learn higher-level spells. Now, this class is Defense Against the Dark Arts, so you first need to learn how to defend against the dark itself. A good spell for this is Lumos. It causes - yes, I do see you laughing, Mr. Malfoy, please see me after class - it causes a beam of light to shine from the end of your wand. It is done like this. . . Now, to put the light out, use the spell Finite Incantatum. You may also use Nox to extinguish the light, but Finite Incantatem will give you a larger base to start with when learning other spells. This particular incantation is useful for stopping the effects of other spells, and we will be using it later on. For the rest of the period, we will be practicing the use of these two spells.

For homework, please tell me why the spells Lumos and Finite Incantatum are important to this class. No more than a paragraph is needed, but please be descriptive. This homework is worth a maximum of 20 points. I advise you to remember these lessons so that you will be ready for exams, which will be worth more than homework. Until next week, then. . .
