U.S. Short Course

Orienteering Champs 1996

The short course championships took place on March 9, 1996. The competition was held at Clinton State Park near Lawrence, Kansas, and was hosted by Orienteer Kansas. This site includes maps with the winners' routes and some analysis of those routes. Currently only the M21 course is loaded. This page was last updated November 24, 1997.

M21 Results:

  1. Mikell Platt (19:52)
  2. James Scarborough (20:14)
  3. Mark Everett (21:09)

F21 Results:

  1. Peggy Dickison (22:52)
  2. Beatrice McBride (25:33)
  3. Katherine Carlson (44:24)

Mikell Platt's routes are shown in dashed red/pink. I have included James Scarborough's routes on several legs. Mikell, James, and Mark Everett had a good race. At the spectator control they were all within about 25 seconds (with James being ahead and Mark and Mikell just seconds apart).

When I looked at the routes I tried to see if I could figure out how James got a lead in the first part of the course, and how Mikell managed to make up that lead and beat James. I went back to the map and ran a couple of the routes to test some of my thoughts. As you look at the routes, you will see my analysis.

The course setter for the U.S. Champs was Gene Wee.

I am interested in comments from people who have taken a look at these pages. The best way to make your comments is to use the guestbook. To see other people's comments, view the guestbook.

Check out the first leg.
